Hello Steemians!
Today I come with a post for the DuoDraw Monthly Art Contest held by @hanbun.
The theme for this month's contest is Alice in Wonderland. Specifically, the concepts of madness and wonder that are closely related to the story.
I had to pick one of the concepts to represent the illustration. Upon much thought, I ultimately chose wonder.
Without further ado, let me introduce the complete illustration before explaining the concept behind it:
According to the Merrian-Webster dictionary wonder can be defined as:
"rapt attention or astonishment at something awesomely mysterious or new to one's experience"
First of all, I have to say I wanted to play with this concept because it's a very magical word. It's open to interpretation, as the sense of wonder differs a lot from person to person, we all experience wonder in different ways and caused by different things, so it's no surprise that everyone interprets it differently.
I think people tend to associate somber atmospheres and colors to madness rather than wonder. But I wanted to use these hues and colors to make a contrast between the innocent Alice and the dark woods. At this very moment she is almost in a trance by the sheer wonder of what she could find down the hole. I wanted to make her pop and look almost out of place due to the strong emotion she is feeling at the moment.
And I think childish wonder is very powerful, children tend to be very curious and very innocent. Things that don't make an adult bat an eye can make a child feel completely enthralled by it.
In the end, I think both madness and wonder go very hand in hand in Alice in Wonderland, so it's difficult to not have them overlap a bit.
Here's a gif of the illustration process:
Afterwords
Hi! I'm still crying because I barely managed to post this on time. My internet went out last night so I was panicking over this post. Haha.Anyways, thanks for checking out this entry. I didn't have the time to detail too much the drawing process but it's pretty similar to what I usually do.
I want to up my background game though, so I'm gonna spend some time checking... some tutorials or something.
I had fun making this! I hope you enjoyed it.
Thanks for reading!
