Kilian Schönberger is a photographer and geographer who manages to take fascinating photographs of really incredible places.
Schönberger climbed the Alps late at night, capturing one of the strangest landscapes in the mountain range. These are columns or pillars of earth that look like a science fiction movie or another planet.
From his first visit in the 90s to South Tyrol with his family, the photographer has felt a special attraction for the pillars of the Earth, so he decided to share his vision on these landscapes through his photography.
A surprising natural phenomenon

These pillars of Earth are located in a place called South Tyrol, an autonomous province, in northern Italy.
The photographer made the Otherworld series in which he shows the pillars, also called earth pyramids, with the dawn light and its strange shapes that look like underground caves.
The curious size and shape of these pyramids are created by erosion and rise from the clay soil. Each of them has a rock on top that protects the soil. The stones are up to 2 meters in diameter and the ground is made up of glacial remains. Because of erosion stones are washed out of the ground, but rainfall does not affect these pyramids that begin to grow.
While the pillars have also been photographed by day, Schönberger has managed to make a difference by photographing them in mist and low light, adding a mysterious air to the landscape.
These natural wonders are truly incredible and it seems hard to believe they are part of our planet. Would you like to visit them?
