Ever seen clouds before? Ever notice how they're always above your head? Then if you look to the horizon, the clouds gradually step down and look they're touching the ground off in the distance? Call you buddy over there and ask him if his head is in the clouds. He'll say, no, they're above my head.
If the earth was flat, you'd always see a gap between the clouds and the ground off in the distance. Even with a telescope, if the earth was flat, you'd see that gap.
The reason we don't see this 'gap' is because the clouds wrap around the globe.
The ship on the horizon is hidden from you by the waves closest to you. Compared to a ship, the waves are bigger, which means you see less. There are many photographs in which during calm, with a good zoom, you can see the ship completely behind the imaginary horizon).
Well, clearly, that's just because they're sinking. 😅
