5.1 Richter Scale Earthquake hits New Zealand

New Zealand or Aotoreo in local Maori language was hit by a earthquake measuring 5.1 richter scale today.

The 17km deep quake struck at 2:42pm and was centred 30km northeast of Seddon.

By 3pm, 35,000 people had reported feeling the quake on the GeoNet website

A Picton resident has described it as a "bit of a big juddery" quake, rattling their house.
All trains in the city have been temporarily suspended, and those on the Hutt Valley, Kapiti, and Johnsonville lines are operating at reduced speeds.

Earlier on Wednesday a magnitude 5.8 shake was recorded shortly after 1:40pm.

It occured at a depth off 33km and 585km off the Southland coast.
