Skulls of slain vampires sometimes become re-animated with necromancy, allowing the spirit of the former vampire to possess it once again. This is used for dark rituals, for information gathering, and even by necromancers with a macabre sense of humor. The souls are not happy with their situation, but often seek to turn the tide in their favor. They will go along with what their captor asks in hopes of returning to a full body.
These skulls still feel the bloodthirst they did in their lives, driving them to be very ruthless and foul-tempered. They have no empathy and can prove very cunning in their strategies and words. For instance, the necromantic power flowing through the skull left a mark and each one is protected by a nearly imperceptible magic shield. When harmed by any weapon, the skull lashes out with the magic used to create it to harm the attacker. The necromancers that keep these skulls must walk a fine line between harming them and distrusting anything the skull says.
The archmage quickly entered his study, arms full of parchments. He only had a day to act on this new information. If he was successful, he could stealthily do away with an opponent, and no one would be able to trace the murder back to him. If he was caught, then that was the end of his career.
He owed it all to the skull, of course. It had provided critical information on his rival. Across the room, on a dark and ornate table, sat the skull. It was still and silent, and yet it seemed to stare right through him. The vampiric fangs dug into the wood of the table, and the jawline seemed to curve up into a grin.
Never trust the souls of the dead, for they will do anything to return to physical form.
He recalled the words of his master, spoken over and over to him during his apprenticeship. But what did that old man know, anyway? He died in obscurity.
Even as he grabbed what he needed and headed out of his office, he felt the eyes of the skull burning into his back. He wondered how long it would be before the soul of the vampire tried to betray him, as well. As if sensing his thoughts, the skull's eyes burned with purple flames and it rose from the table, heading for the necromancer. “Does something trouble you, my liege?” hissed the skull.
“No. No, not at all. Return to your post, I shall call you when needed.”
The necromancer backed toward the door and tightly gripped a large leather tome he carried. The skull slowly advanced on him. “I said, return to your post this instant!”
“My post?” growled the skull. “My post was taken from me. I believe I'll make a new one for myself. With you.” The skull rushed the necromancer with chattering teeth. He raised the book and brought it down on top of the flying skull and was met with a bright flash of light as it collided with bone. The necromancer's body slumped instantly to the floor, dead.
“Pity, I would have much preferred to hear you scream while I took your body.”
