The attention economy and advertising spend (some more stats)

in #economics8 years ago

I had a very interesting meeting yesterday and last night with potential partner with some serious financial backing behind them. I introduced them to Crypto , the blockchain and had some very interesting conversations about potential opportunities specifically to developing countries on the African continent. I am very sure that we will have some good news very soon on new ways to spawn companies addressing real world problems with solutions specifically based on Blockchain technology.

It is still my vision to assist the Steem platform to get real world currency flowing into the STEEM ecosystem

Growth of Advertising spend

I have read some very interesting stats on the growth of advertisement spent over the past few years. It is seriously astonishing what the attention economy recently brought to the table. The growth number of smart phones across the world, specifically in the developing countries has also gave a whole new spin to the advertisers. I will share some more stats from a recent study about internet trends for 2016. You can find the full study here.

Smartphone costs in developing countries

Smartphone Cost in Many Developing Markets = Material % of Per Capita Income... 15% (Vietnam) / 10% (Nigeria) / 10% (India) / 6% (Indonesia), per McKinsey

Advertisers still remain over indexed to legacy media

It does look like advertising on Radio has stabilised, but print and television is still going down while Online advertising is still on an upward trend.

Adverts that work

It looks like we have became so used to television ads that it will be difficult to make other media work online. Video adverts still work the best.

I hope you enjoyed these stats just as much as I did, I see some serious opportunity here as a more longer term solution for yet another way to get real world currency to flow into the STEEM ecosystem.

This would be excellent . The potential here is just massive and we have barely scratched the surface with where Steemit can go if it succeeds. Success will mean BIG success here.

Will steemit members get a share in the adverts ?

You will in the form of value of your SP, Steem and SBD.

@jacor these days I am also thinking about steemit needing to "conquer" the non-english world.

Also explored how steemit could find alternatives to the STEEM/USD market as funding method. I wrote 2 articles with posible solutions for both subjects that I would like to share with you:

How Steemit could learn from Ripple's funding strategy

Steemit.com: a much needed upgrade!

Thanks for the comment and followed you as well. I will read your posts soon. Tx

Thanks @jacor, will await your comments :o)

Excellent article. You may find some resistance from the Whales on opening up Steemit to external currency (real world as you put it). As far back as June, I was involved in a few discussions about adding advertising to Steemit to grow the platform and met very strong resistance from some of the witness/whale class. They wanted to keep the user interface "pure" as they put it.

Hey, @gregory-f, we do not necessarily need the advertising on the Steemit application itself. Remember the underlying platform can be used to spin off any other type of application which might contain advertising. Watch this space. I will show you how in a few weeks :)

great post, like it

The African continent should be a relevant part of steemit social network too.

Steemit certainly has great potential to impact the developing world but there is a lot of work required to bridge the usability issues require to capture and retain that demographic audience. Now it the time to gain that market share.

The market share will come. Just hang in there ☺

Love it, online marketing and advertising is what I do. Great synopsis.

A noteworthy analysis indeed. It shows the landslide the media world has been undergoing at the hands of technological innovation, an clearly there is much to come still.

Good info. Mobile ad space is just exploding. Making sure one's website is mobile view friendly is almost more important now than desktop. Times they are a changing.
