Human is resident of the earth, either in the east, west, south, or north. Every single of our activities has an impact on nature. It is initiated from vehicle emission to shoes that we used every day. There is a person however who has a big role in taking care of the Earth. He/she is a farmer/peasant. It is because he/she directly is touching the earth every single day.
It is vital therefore in my sight. To understand what peasants need (based on my region which exists more peasant than farmers). It is like saving our earth because they are earth nurse.
Providing beneficial crops to the environment and peasants
Along with Odesa Indonesia, I see how important to approach peasants rather than making a gigantic program. Then we offer sustainable agriculture to them. Majority of them are vegetable planters. They cultivate union, cassava, chili, and cabbage.
Yet, it is not totally beneficial for them. It is not valuable neither to the earth nor their financials. A vegetable garden needs a ground that could get full sunshine. It should not plant big three on it, because it could hide the sun for the vegetable crops.
As a result, the valley that becomes garden has been being barren. The ground became ill after being cultivated vegetable excessively for decades. They could not cultivate when the dry season run long time. The crops could not save water when the rain comes. It implicated to lack of water. The appearance of the ground is like tired for working without pause.
It becomes a habit. We need hard effort to solve it. Besides, it was done massively. Becoming status quo. Many of them are not skeptical of facing this case that it is right or not.
We think that there is another way to evolve agriculture here. Without interfering with the basics of their plants, we offer local crops: moringa and adlay (Coix lacryma jobi). On the other hand, we also motivate peasants to grow sorghum, sunflower, and several fruit trees.
All of them would answer environmental and economical crises around peasants. Moringa would be the best crop to fulfill the nutrients of peasant families. Adlay would also become alternative food besides rice.
Erosion is another issue that occurs here. When the rain comes, the valley ground that becomes the garden float along with rainwater until reached the city. Who knows how much the land went down in a year.
It becomes a disaster once. The flood contained sand till could cover the asphalt. It comes from what we see as the garden in the valley.
To answer this case, we invite peasants to plant big trees beside their main crops. We serve free seed gained from many denatures. They are durian (Durio zibethinus), sukun (Artocarpus altilis), belingbing (Averrhoa carambola), jambu air (Syzygium aqueum), jambu batu (Psidium guajava), and alpukat (Persea Americana).
The peasants apparently welcome the crops. They think it could beneficial for them especially for the fruits. Many of them regularly get free seedlings from authority but not the fruit. It makes them ignore the agenda of reforestation.
Excellent article.
I think it's a great project, besides helping the earth, it also raises awareness. We only have one planet earth, we must take care of it
Thank you. Yes, in taking care of our planet we have to engage people especially who have big role. Together with solidarity power, I think...
Buena iniciativa
Gracias 🙏
