RE: Back Acres: How to Make Beeswax Candles - with Citronella

in #ecotrain7 years ago

1 - The wicks we purchased pre-made this time, but after having a closer look at the, I see how they could be made by dragging a cotton string through some melted wax then letting them cool straight, the metal on the bottom might not be needed with this method - i havent tested this theory yet.
2 - I haven't seen a air pocket problem with this method - the main potential for difficulties I would see would be from if the wick comes detached from the bottom after pouring the last of the wax. Thanks @barge - I'm glad you enjoyed seeing how we do the candle making :)

Hey @jackdub, thanks for getting back to me.

  1. I make my own wicks by dragging a cotton string through some melted wax then letting them cool straight. I use tin foil instead of the metal at the bottom. I do the same as you - a bit of wax to get it to stick to the bottom. Great tip for me to use a stick and wind it round - I'm going to try that next time.
  2. I think I probably heat the wax too hot. I will use a dedicated tin and boiling water (rather than wax in container directly over flame). I've had to pour the wax in little by little to avoid air pockets.
    Great and thanks again :D
