How To Do Some Last Minute Preparation For PT3 & SPM

in #education6 years ago

PT3 and SPM are just around the corner and you need to prepare. I know how you feel, I have been there. As such, let me share with you three ways that helped me prepare for those dreaded exams.

STOP Studying!

No seriously, stop reading those textbooks for PT3 and SPM. Its a bit too late now. Reading is great if you have more time to prepare. If you were busy with ahem other things but now need to catch up with Sejarah, science or any other PT3 or SPM subjects, studying is not the way. That's because there are more efficient ways of doing it.

Take a look at the learning pyramid. Based on the learning pyramid, reading or memorizing all those nilai-nilai murni or Geografi facts is the worse thing you can do. If you want to remember more content, try anything from audio-visual onwards.

The other two points will focus on everything from demonstration to teaching others. However, a method you can use with audiovisual is to record yourself reading up your PT3 and SPM notes. As you are on your way to school, listen to yourself narrating those important points. It's more effective than staring at the textbook.

Horde/Buy/Borrow Every Activity Book

Get some friends together and hit every single library or bookstore for as many activity books as you can. If you are not doing well in subjects such as Sains and Sejarah in the PT3, the best way is to practice. The same goes for SPM, all the bio, physics, chemistry and economics subjects require a lot of studying time. However, as you near the exam, its time to start completing those activity books.

Wait, you didn't study? No problem. Just attempt all the questions first. Upon completion, check the answers and take notes on questions that you don't do well. Repeat this process in other books. By the time you hit the third or fifth book, you will realize two things. First, the questions are all similar. Second, you seem to be making fewer mistakes. That's because the facts don't change much.

However, for application subjects for PT3 and SPM, this consists of English, Malay, Mathematics, and Accounts, the same method can be applied, just in a different manner. Take note of the 'high value' questions. For language subjects, it's normally the essays. For essays, no matter if you are doing PT3 or SPM, write factual essays as there is a standard format to it. Check out the model essays in those activity books and you will start to see a pattern. For example, they give a lot of examples. As for mathematics and accounts. Divide your topics into what you deem as 'simple', 'ok' and 'complex'. Focus on the simple and ok topics first. If you have time then tackle the complex ones.

Study Groups

I know, such a cliche method isn't it? However, it is in study groups that you can teach others, demonstrate and discuss. All these methods rank very high in the learning pyramid. So, if completing activity books on your own is not working, run a study group.

Sometimes you just need that extra 'push' in study groups (Image source)

A standard way is to each take a topic and construct a mind map for the rest of the group. When you all meet up, present it to them and be open to questions. If you can't answer those questions, that's ok, find out and get back to them. As a teacher, I often find that I learn best from teaching a topic. Ironic isn't it? But true.

Of course, if your friends are those who don't show up. Record the presentation and post it on Youtube or just share it with your friends. I know, its embarrassing, but remember, you're doing it for you, not for them.

Conclusion

Last but not least, all the best in your PT3 and SPM! I hope these methods help you as you charge ahead towards victory.
