It is strange to us too as we are used to the fact that teachers and parents are allowed to communicate and be friends even. This is an amazing school but there is no such thing even as a teacher-parent evening, nothing. We've gotten used to their ways. Perhaps this is just the way it works in private schools in the Middle East, I don't know.

Could be? Maybe that's the most effective approach they have found to deal with potential social, political, cultural spats? Still seems extreme to me and rigid.
It is. I would think that even if you are just communicating via e-mail, it would be satisfying enough for both parents and teachers. Teachers would still be safe from angry parents and supervisors could easily take over where need be. I'll keep on dreaming for change, I guess ;) but still, not accepting a thank you note from a preschooler...not cool :(
