Art Talk:
@jacinta.sevilla with the students photo by L.Luy
I was invited to discuss about fine arts and contemporary arts in Ama computer learning center or "ACLC", an academy for computer courses, IT and animation. These students are also learning about art as a part of their curriculum. I had one hour to discuss the topic, February 27, 2018.
Grateful for the invitation, I was excited to share what I could when it comes to art. I accepted the offer.

I am not an art teacher, I make art and I have studied art formally before but I have only done an art seminar before once about Color theory and blending and mixing colors for a workshop.
I had some self doubt if I would be able to explain properly or say the right things or maybe I won't be able to explain well enough, but it's a good experience to share what I know and also, this is a way for me to practice teaching and making efficient presentations.

I was given a list of topics to choose from I studied them and found a way to explain it all while not leaving out any important information.
I wrote a draft of the diagrams and lists I had to explain and after several drafts I came up with the easiest and best I could make.
Here's a review I typed along with the lesson
What I planned to do was to explain how the art industry works by explaining art and it's branches and the local fine arts programs/courses here available and including their curriculum.
I figured it would be better for them to know the experience of the art industry regarding traditional and contemporary art.
ABOUT ART, ITS TYPES AND BASICS
On my notes/ word file, here's the first page.
💡 What is art? Art is a process, a range of human activity that creates an auditory, visual, performance result which has beauty or emotional value/envokes emotions.
💡 Why is it important to learn the elements of art and the principles of design? The elements of art contain the simplest forms and unit of what you can do with any drawing: A line, a dot, a dash, curve etc.
The elements of art
This deals with what you can do with drawing and what you will use in forming your art.
➡️ Line
➡️ Shape
➡️ Form
➡️ Value
➡️Space
➡️Color
➡️Texture
Think of it this way, the elements of art answers "what can I use to draw my subject?"

You draw lines and shapes, form your subject, shade or color it and put value and different tones and shadow/shadings.
With that, you create different effects of space, distance, the texture of the surface of your subject. Like drawing a rough rock vs. a smooth silky cloth.
The principles of design
This is "How you will use the elements of art". This sets your plans for how to draw your subject applying a concept and visual effects, the arrangement and so on.
➡️Balance
➡️Contrast
➡️Emphasis and subordination
➡️Harmony
➡️Space and proportion
➡️Arrangement
➡️Rhythm
Let's say you want to create art with a certain theme
The principles of design help you decide the arrangement, effects, the focus, and the perspective of your art.
If you want to express movement with extra strokes and lines, if you want to emphasize a colorful subject in a monochromatic background, if you want to to balance out colors of your background, consider these.
Painting styles
In the module, a few painting styles were given.
➡️(1) Objective accuracy which refers to creating your subject or piece in a realistic way.
➡️(2) The style of formal order where the artist should have a distinct or established style of painting/drawing.
Like cubism for example - the shapes are defined and patterned.
➡️(3) The style of Emotion when art expresses and envokes emotions.
➡️(4) The style of Fantasy making different drawings on surreal or make believe.
Sculptures
This page shows the different ways of sculpting and materials to use. I just shared the techniques and some other materials we also used in our fine arts class and art workshops.
I also put in pictures as samples
💡 Other materials you can sculpt with nowadays:
➡️Molding clay
➡️Polymer clay
➡️Plaster of paris
➡️Cement
➡️ Paper machete
➡️Epoxy (A + B mixture) and flour
Public and Technology aided art
Installation art, digital art and Photography.
These are common to us now.
The purpose of installation art is to:
➡️ Attract
➡️ Beautify
➡️ To remind
➡️ To educate
➡️ Advertise
➡️ Inform
Photography and digital art
Both are really profitable today. With the help of digital devices art seems to be easier? Faster and accessible.
Logo making, portraiture, designing, animation, graphics, videography, filming, journalism and photography are real easier to do.
My final draft
I wanted to make an easier depiction/diagram? I can't find the word.
Art flow
➡️ Art is a process, aesthetic and conceptual. It creates a product/performance act. It has emotional value.
➡️ You may be wondering why:
💡Linguistics
💡Literature
💡Martial arts
Are included,
💭LINGUISTICS
you can create language(LOTR: elvish, middle earth languages; BLACK PANTHER: wakanda's language and writing) and appreciate its phonetic and phonological art.
💭LITERATURE
for its emotional value and creative forms: poetry, stories, novels, rhymes, limericks etc.
💭MARTIAL ARTS
it's a performance art and like dancing, theres creativity and rhythm in it.
So with visual arts, we have drawing, and when we draw the elements of art and the principles of design are the most important to all types of visual art, whether youre painting or drawing, making a sculpture, designing clothes, interiors designing and even with digital art it all depends on knowing the basics.
The only available courses for fine arts here in The Philippine women's college of Davao (PWC), Ford Academy of the Arts and The university of Mindanao (UM). with only PWC offering a major in fashion designing and interior designing. Whereas Ford and UM only have major in painting and multimedia arts.
With my observation in exhibits and in making art when people order, I told them it's mostly
(1) to make portraits and paintings on canvas portraying realism art
(2) Making surreal/ fantasy art/ concept art
(3) logos
(4) Commercial and fashion photography
(5) Graphics and designing for games
(6) Digital art: portraiture and fantasy art
I tried to write this on the white board. It helped me explain better.
Q & A
Only one student asked:
❔What do you do when you make a mistake in drawing? Do you erase a bit and redraw or start all over again?
💡💭 My answer:
You can erase and try mending it. But if you feel like starting over its your choice.
You can try and finish it and figure out what you don't like, where you went wrong and accept it. Next time, don't repeat those errors.
It takes time and practice. Keep at it. You can't expect it to be perfect immediately, it takes a lot of repetition and making new works all the time. Just keep at it.
QUICK SKETCH ✍️🗞️
One volunteer! I only had a ballpen and less than 3 minutes.
Did I do a good job? Yes? No?
Here are some artworks I brought with me as a sample
Based on my personal experience as an artist, I brought samples which I thought were most relevant to the topic, and you may know some of these already:
- painting/drawing with objective accuracy. For this I chose my realism portraits of animals and my friends.
Painting for a nomad: watercolor painting
colored pencil art: Mother and cub
Surrealism/ fantasy art: I chose "pod playground"
colored pencil artwork: Pod playgroundanimation I had "senbazuru", to represent anime style of drawing.
colored pencil art: Senbazuru, the legend of a thousand paper storksDigital art: mixed media I had "between good and evil"
This is a colored pencil and pen and ink art with a digital background
autodesk sketchbook and stylus on mobile phoneNature photography, I chose my flower photography
with magicJournalism, I brought my editorial cartoon of Duterte's drug war
Lady Narco of the Philippines
I had other art pieces with me and a few more which I gave away to the students!

Woah, this is superb, @jacinta.sevilla! I just had a basic introduction to elements of art and principles of design with my students two months ago before our winter break. Found lots of resources that are relevant for their age. Thanks for sharing! :)

Art is an expression for all of us to communicate, especially with ourselves. I had my art class way back during my primary and secondary school time. Gonna pick up art back with simple sketches :)
Thank you! I hope they enjoyed and learned hehe
