My intent has been to outline a set of subjects that would lead to a very broad awareness and strong foundational understanding of the world and it's possibilities; to develop a sense in an individual that anything can be achieved and understood. The subjects are intended to cover some of the most important aspects of life without pretense or unsatisfactory imitations or substitutes. A foundational understanding left unclouded by modern distractions.
I hope to build upon this idea or concept; with more research and practical experiences; it is an idea that has been on my mind for a long time and it feels good to be expressing my ideas now.
What exactly does this curriculum consist of? Inc. brief reasoning for each topic.
Horticulture
Food production is clearly the most necessary aspect of our lives, and something that we should all be involved in - I feel that being in nature is also very necessary for grounding oneself. Growing ones own food creates more connection to and awareness of what we are eating without the need for complex nutritional understanding one might lack. The food that an individual grows can be used in their own cooking practice - which emphasises it's connection to; and reliance on horticulture. We are more likely to develop healthy dietary habits, and far nearer than most to interesting new discoveries of fresh flavors and herbal curiosities.
Food Preparation
"Preparing food for eating, generally requires selection, measurement and combination of ingredients in an ordered procedure so as to achieve desired results. Food preparation includes but is not limited to cooking."
There is so much variety, and it is such an interesting medium that also rises above survival needs to the platform of self-actualisation. It is in itself an art form. A skill such as this can impress, delight and provide a living. It also leaves no reason to be bored - You can always cook; and it is always necessary!
Movement
Their are some wonderful organisations promoting the importance of natural movement; MOVNAT is covering some very interesting ground. It is something I would love to be engaged with. It is clear that our bodies are meant to be moving - a thorough understanding of the ways in which we move and consistent practice can only augment this activity and make us more capable of it's "proper" and safe application.
Language
Grammar
Logic
Rhetoric
Commonly known together as the trivium - This set of 3 subjects leave the student able to think for themselves and apply proper critical thinking skills to their activities. @krnel has some wonderful expositions of this topic - and is highly recommended reading.
Mathematics
Alongside language, it seems that all prerequisites for complex thought are met - language and number are essential aspects of any academic or intellectual field. A clear understanding of these two subjects will lead one to greater success in any field.
Handwriting
Expressing oneself is an essential part of life - a personalised letter or even a 'resume' is more likely to receive attention and praise, handwriting is also said to reflect ones personality; and the desire to change it belies a change in attitude, perspective or consciousness - this can only be a positive thing. This skill also includes the proper formatting of a page of writing - and could even progress to an understanding of calligraphy which has it's intersection with design and advertisement.
Drawing
An ability to accurately illustrate ones ideas can make a world of difference to ones creative output - a confident drawing ability has it's benefits in many areas of life - professional and personal; when taught effectively anyone can improve this skill. As with handwriting, drawing has it's intersection with design and advertisement - it would also prove useful in some very technical fields.
Singing
It has been said that singing can promote feelings of wellbeing, it is also a wonderful confidence booster and I feel it will improve an individuals diction and speaking ability - an essential skill in a predominantly social environment. It is also a great first step in pursuit of an understanding of music without the necessity of reading it.
The Next Step
I Hope to write more about this, and see where it leads.
Interesting topics convergence. Keep it up!
Much appreciated! :)
