WHEN TO FIRE A PROFESSOR [85 SECOND READ]

in #education7 years ago

I think maybe professors should be allowed to give their opinion. Sometimes it gets a bit extreme like this professor who got fired, although FOX News maybe instigated it a little.

I think part of the reason why this is such a big issue in the USA especially is because education in the USA, from my experience, is very much treated as a business - but I guess that is because I was lucky enough to go to to private school - St Albans - and private liberal arts university - Harvard.

So my perspective may be biased. I just get annoyed sometimes when teachers and/or professors are forced to be overly politically correct to the point where they can hardly say anything. Maybe that is one of the unintended consequences of a very free market. Or some on the right would argue that it is simply a natural result of a society that has been radically damaged by liberals.

The media, on the other hand, may have gone too far. I think the media in the USA is so biased and are losing their credibility compared to the media in Europe. I cannot seem to find media outlets that are not biased towards one side or the other on pretty much all issues. Usually along the lines of Republican vs. Democrat, Capitalism vs. Socialism, etc. That said, I am pleasantly surprised that Breitbart and Trump for that matter embraces the LGBT community.

The rising populist movement in the USA seems to transcend traditional party lines. Or, perhaps if we go back in history, we will find parties that are not divided along the same lines as those we see in the USA today. And that may then be because political debate, not just in the US but globally, has become dominated by lobbyists and money.

Why? Partly, because political debate has become an industry in itself. Anything that kindles emotion has the ability to make people buy stuff. And when people buy stuff you have an industry.

If it's not STEM it's a hobby

hahah.. well said. Its sad to see how STEM professionals looks down great professions like farming, carpentry etc.,

how you figure? farming and carpentry ARE Stem.

I agree.

Yes, on paper. When I said 'farming' - i am not talking about agriculture from science point of view, I was talking about traditional farming. I didnt figure by myself, its how people view at top level. I worked at exxon and general view among these professionals was not that good when it comes to farming.. more or less they see these professions as dirty jobs. But i feel farming is the best profession for humanity. STEM is more concentrated towards medical and engineering side.

Stem means Science TECHNOLOGY (including agrobiz) ENGINEERING (including mechanics) and Mathematics.
Farming IS a dirty job..but someone's got to do it or we starve.

You mean like liberal arts or philosophy?

yup..
anything that is not falsifiable.

Interesting perspective! FOLLOWING YOU!!!

Interesting article. In my college days some professors love one or two students most and give them more marks. I Hate this strategy of professors.

Why did they love them so much?

because they are Flattery.

Interesting perspective, thanks for that! FOLLOWING YOU!!!

Yes, you are right about it. Education has become a lucrative business, not just in USA, but in most of the countries. We are witnessing the imbalance with respect to skilled professionals.

What do you mean an imbalance?

I agree with you 100% .

Thanks for letting me know! I hope you have a WONDERFUL day!!
