There is a wonderful series of photos showing a two year old looking through a magazine alongside an adult. The child turns the page to see a double spread of watches advertised for sale.
The adult shows the child that she is also wearing a watch and encourages the child to feel it. The teacher holds her wrist to the child's ear so she can hear the ticking. The child listens for a few seconds and then she puts her ear down to the page to see if she can hear ticking from the watches in the magazine.
Now this is 'inquiry'.
Children have a natural instinct to inquire and explore until we take it away in school.
Calvin and Hobbes
Kath Murdoch has been teaching through inquiry for many years. It is a joy to watch her and there is much to learn.
