There is a wonderful series of photos showing a two year old looking through a magazine alongside a teacher.
The child turns the page to see a double spread of watches advertised for sale.
The teacher shows the child that she is also wearing a watch and encourages the child to touch it. The teacher holds her wrist to the child's ear so she can hear the ticking. The child listens for a few seconds and then she puts her ear down to the page to see if she can hear ticking from the watches in the magazine. Now this is inquiry learning in a two year old child.
Children have a natural instinct to enquire and explore, until we take it away from them in school.
See what I mean?
Kath Murdoch has been teaching and practising inquiry learning for many years. It is a joy to watch Kath in action and we can learn much from her.
