My entry for [LEARN & EARN - Week #15] - Steemit

in #education6 years ago

Here is another entry for this awesome game from @matkodurko.

This initiative is simple - what have I learned recently?
No theme this week...

Over the past few days I learned:

No. 1 - Wyoming is REALLY big!

Wyoming is the 10th largest state in area. It's just a little bigger than the United Kingdom.. 97,914 sq mi (253,600 km2) according to Wikipedia

Even the county we live in - Natrona - is huge... 5,376 sq mi (13,924 km2) according to Wikipedia. This compares to Northern Ireland at 14,130 km2 (5,460 sq mi) or the state of Connecticut at 5,567 sq mi (14,357 km2)

I was talking to @cicisaja the other day about sizes. She was letting me know that another Steemian was currently in Rock Springs, Wyoming and we should meet up. Great idea, except that the map is very good at making you think things are much smaller than they are... I discovered that the drive to Rock Springs from Casper is approximately 228 miles - so roughly 3 1/2 hours, maybe 4 if the weather isn't perfect or you need to take a break.

As Cici is in Indonesia, I looked for a distance that was similar there - something close to home that she could compare it with.
The distance from Jakarta to Semarang is approximately 250 miles, so a little longer.

Cici was shocked - for her, it would take about 13 hours to travel this distance! I'm suddenly grateful for uncongested and roads in good condition!

No. 2 - Kiddle search engine for kids

Brought to you by Google (whom I know we all love...), here is a kid-friendly search engine that should produce all the results you would expect, without all the sites you don't. Try Kiddle.

No. 3 - The difference between a xylophone, a glockenspiel, a marimba and a vibraphone

Another piece that came via a dispute with my husband, lol.
I had always thought that a glockenspiel was the wooden instrument I played in third grade - made sense with the "glock" maybe being the sound made when the mallet hit the wood... (many languages have a lot of sound names) - but I was completely wrong! (Or outdated, perhaps.)

The modern glockenspiel is always metal! The marimba is always wood - with resonators below it. A xylophone should be wooden, but in reality, it's often metal too. A vibraphone seems to be a little in the middle and is used for jazz whereas the modern xylophone is more likely to be used in Western music.

No. 4 - Coypu vs Nutria

I never remembered seeing these creatures when I was growing up, but when I was in Vancouver, WA, with my parents, I got familiar to seeing this creature at the local wildlife areas. Now, I'm aware that these creatures have become a nuisance in many areas.

I was told this week that nutria is technically the fur of the coypu. I was hoping to find a link for this, but I haven't found one yet - though in many areas nutria are highly valued for their fur, so maybe it's more of a regional thing - not sure.

Apparently, coypu also make very good eating. Here is a recipe if you want to help take care of a local infestation. There's a lot of other great information about the coypu at Eat the Weeds - and info about lots of other wild foods.

No. 5 - Norway's stunning Atlantic Ocean Road

I'm sure I've seen pictures of it before, but I've never really learned about it...
Stretching only 5.2 miles into the Atlantic connecting the communities of Averøy and Eida in Møre og Romsdal, Norway.

Its completion closed a ferry route - though looking at the waves that are common in bad weather, it's probably a good thing.

Here is the road on a nice day:

And on a not-so-nice day:

(Note: I'm having trouble seeing YouTube videos right now on Steempeak - but it's working fine on Steemit...)

I think that's going to be it this week.

Even if you're not entering the contest (why not?) what have you learned this week?
