Why education sticks to the past or aims for the future... and... what's wrong with that

in #education7 years ago

As educator I'm always looking for ways to better my practice and better education as a whole.

Education is an industry that has a hard time changing and adapting. This lies part in the way teachers become teachers. I'm always jealous of industries where money is flowing, risk logical, failure is possible. These things are strangers to educators. The pressure is high, funds are low, parents critical, etc.
So how are teachers and schools adapting to changes? Well... they're not. Some might say they are, some might try, but all fail... And I don't blame them.

What schools do is stick to the past, or aim for the future.

I think I don't have to explain why the first is not working out for our society. But what's wrong with schools that try to prepare students for the future? They try to think about the needs for future society and how to teach these skills to students. They buy new technologies and experiment with them. They have makerspaces and what not more.
But there's one thing they don't think about; the present...

So my idea would be, stick to the here and now. What's going on in your neighbourhood? How can you solve loneliness of the elderly? Plant trees in the park. Ask your mayor to help fix a problem. Make drawings of the new townhall.

I believe that if we teach students to deal with the present, they will be more prepared than ever for the future.

We don't have the faintest idea about the future, so why even bother? All we can do is deal with the present.

Why do we ask children; 'What do you want to become when you grow up?' We should change the question to: 'What are you now?' What are you going to do today that helps you today? How are you going to help someone that has an impact now?
