Bring stalks back to home and soak clear running water as soon as possible.
前回、刈り取りをして持ち帰った苧麻をすぐに流水につけます。以前は清水に浸けたそうです。
Put stones carefully not to scratch stalks. Once scratched, the inside of the skin color turn to brown. Soaking is for not to dry out and helps make the skin easy to strip off.
流れてしまわないように、そして傷を付けないように慎重に重しをのせます。少しでも擦ってしまつと茶色く傷んだ繊維になってしまいます。
Put stalks on the work table.
そして台の上に置いて作業を始めます。
Hold the stalk a little right side of center, then push it and break the stem first.
まず中央より少し右手に持ち、両親指でグッと押して中の芯を折ります。
Treat them very careful not to hurt the skin.
この時、皮を傷つけないように茎だけを折るようにします。
Then get rid of the stem from right side. Make sure inside of the fingers always toward the stem side, not skin side.
次に右手から順番に芯を指にくるむようにしながら芯から皮だけを剥いでいきます。
Then left hand. Do the same thing with inside of fingers toward the stem side not to make it in trouble.
右手が終わったら左手です。常に指の腹部分が芯をくるむように手を添わせます。
Get rid of the stem in this way, then lined up these two pieces of the skin root side the right.
こうして芯を取り除き、上下2枚の外皮を根元側が右になるように揃え置きます。
Soak in fresh water again.
芯を取り除いた苧麻の皮はまた、しばらく水に浸けておきます。
Not to waste stems, dry them and bring them back to the yard next morning to make them a fertilizer.
取り除いた芯も無駄にはしません。乾かしてから畑に戻します。この芯のことを「苧（お）がら」というのですが、苧麻ではなく大麻の乾燥した苧がら（麻（お）がら）はお盆の迎え火、送り火に使われることもありますので、「あ、そう言えば見たことある」と思われる方もいらっしゃるかも知れません。

苧麻という植物は中国や韓国でも長く織られてきた繊維ですので、
どちらの国にも調査へ出掛けたり、文献で勉強したりしているんですよ。
韓国は「韓山モシ」が有名ですね！
このシリーズは、直ぐに理解して戴くのは難しいと思うので「へぇ〜」くらいに思って戴けたらと思って書いてるんですけど、なかなか難しいもんですね（特に英語）

おがらって変わった名前やなと思ってました。
楮の皮むきならやったことあるんですが、あれはもっとざっくばらんでした。全然ちゃいます。
とにかく傷をつけたらあかんのですねぇ。

@suminyan10さん、そうなんですよ、麻殻と書いて（おがら）ですね＾＾ こういうちょっとしたことも、以前は知られていたのになかなか自然のものと関連付けられなくなってきてますよね。その辺りについて何かいい方法はないものかと思ってる次第です。楮、されたことあるんですね！私はビデオでしか見たことないですが冷たいし力仕事だし、大変な作業だと思います。昭和村の苧麻は高級商品として扱われるので、すべての作業に気配り、心配りがされています。自宅用のはもう少し大らかに作業する方もおられますけどね。次の繊維を取り出す作業がなかなか面白いので、また見てみてくださいね＾＾*

I think this is what you worked for, isn't it? And I found a tea with the Bast(Nettle family) leaf and the name is "Brennnessel tea" in Berlin.
Wow... this is the reason why I started writing about textile, I want to learn about many things from the people all over the world especially bast fiber. I know some things about Jpns one, but don't have others so much so... :)

Lol... and once I watched it then I see you are experienced and fun person and I like your positive vibes very much... actually I visited your podcast too, I'm not so good at listening English yet but I may visit there and improve my listening skills.
And wow, your children are half Japanese? Then probably you also speak a little Japanese I guess... haha. Well, I live in Japan now but sometimes live in Berlin in these years, because my partner live in Berlin and he is from NY... so US, Germany, Japan... interesting but many things are in common with you!

His parents spoke it but never with their kids. His mom had been in camp here in the US during the war when all the Japanese on the west coast got put in a prison camp.

自分の父親（随分前に他界）が、大学で染料を勉強していたと聞いた事があったので（勿論昔なので化学的な）、染め物って特別なもののイメージを持っています。実際やっているところを見てみたいです。
@amlogさん、そうだったんですか〜。化学的っていうと媒染剤の方ですね？ それは私も興味深いですm。「染め織りのこと」なんて言っておいて染めの方はそれほど詳しくないんですが（見たり勉強するのは好きですが）、例えば何かの植物（サクラとか、アカネとか、玉ねぎとか）の染料から布を染める場合にも、媒染剤（化学反応を起こすための薬剤）にアルミを使うのか、ミョウバンを使うのか、酢を使うのかでその色味は大きく違ってきます。古代の人は「アルミニウム」をヒサカキや椿の生木を燃やした灰から得ていたというから、凄い知恵ですよね。そんなところもゆっくりお伝えして行ければと思っています＾＾
