RE: Cleopatra ruler of Egypt

in #egypt7 years ago

Very nice graphics. Cleopatra spoke 7 languages fluently, including Egyptian. She was the only Ptolemy who bothered to learn the language of their subjects.

Cleopatra and King Herod did not like each other very much, though both were technically Antonius' clients; too clever for each others' likings, I suspect. Cleopatra schemed to isolate Herod politically, immediately prior to the fateful battle of Actium. Herod was the only member of Antonius' client rulers who did not participate in the Actium disaster because he was left to administer some minor duties, having fallen in disfavor from Antonius' grace. Herod would have most likely been replaced had Antonius' faction won the contest against Augustus, but fate would have it, Antonius' luck ran out.

Herod, as the only one of Antonius' clients to not have participated in the battle, was granted possessions his post. Herod shrewdly built his political position and was second to none in the East; all thanks to Cleopatra's animosity.
