Traditional food supply chain is one of the main reasons why food prices keep increasing. 70% of the food we eat are cultivated by small-scale farmers and most of these small-scale farmers use this traditional way of brokers and middlemen in the supply chain. Small-scale farmers rely on brokers and middlemen to get their farm produce to the retailers. These set of people also arrange truckers to transport the farm produce to the market or retailers.
These brokers don’t really have a farm and they don’t favor the farmers or truckers, but they take home more profit than both of them who really had to work hard. The stance of brokers to both farmers and truckers is like employers to employee (just as if brokers are the employer)
PROBLEMS FACED BY FARMERS AND TRUCKERS
FARMERS
Small-scale farmers, though they produce 70% of the food we eat, they end up earning a small profit. This is because the food supply chain is complex and foods from farmers have to pass through more than 10 middlemen before it reaches the final grocer. This does not profit the farmer and it will also increase the prices of food in the market. With less profit, small-scale farmers are not able to expand and produce more.
As a soon of a farmer I witness this cruelty of middlemen on the farm. These people will come into the farm and buy at lesser prices, giving farmers the impression that the product is less in the market too. But it got to a stage where farmers decided to move their products themselves closer to grocers and they found out that the price it which they sold is more than 10x the price these middlemen bought from them.
Now let’s imagine that farmers are able to connect with grocers directly and they are able to do their businesses securely.
TRUCKERS
Truckers transport these food supplies by the small-scale farmer to the market. They are always employed by middlemen to help them with the transportation. These middlemen charge farmer high for transportation and pay truckers less. Some of them are even responsible for not paying truckers at all. These independent truckers spend a lot of money purchasing and maintaining their trucks, but they just can’t get past these middlemen. They spend a lot of time on the road and they are not able to promote their business to shippers. They are just stuck to brokers. If they are able to meet farmers directly and agree with them on their price, it will make them more profit.
eHARVESTHUB
eHarvestHub is here to help small farmers and truckers across the globe increase their profit while making food more accessible and less expensive. We can achieve this with the eHarvestHub marketplace, powered by blockchain protocols and smart contracts that remove the multiple layers of middlemen and the need for human involvement in food safety verification. Our goal is to enable consumers to directly contribute to small farmers around the world using our platform.
The main mission of eHarvestHub is to give more profit to the real workers (farmers and truckers), thereby making the price of food low for the public. eHarvestHub is creating a decentralized network of farmers, truckers, and retailers, the network will be based on the Ethereum smart contract to solve payment issues between players of the food supply chain.
How eHarvestHub Works
eHarvestHub marketplace allows farmers to list their fresh produce, aggregate volume across multiple small farmers and provide grocers one location to shop from and still meet their volume demand. Farmers or grocers can also directly hire independent truckers from the platform to transport the good, just like UBER. This marketplace will remove the layers of middlemen enabling farmers to sell directly to grocers and increase their profit. It will also benefit grocers to lower their cost.
Truckers will be able to make more money as they will be paid per load and they will have more time to promote their business and spend times with their families.
BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY
eHarvestHub is implementing blockchain technology coupled with artificial intelligence (AI) that will constantly update data with the eHarvestHub blockchain private network, this will ensure transparency in food supply chain and fair-play for farmers and truckers. The blockchain is most useful because anyone can have access to transaction ledger of the blockchain, this will help a lot as both farmers and consumers will be able to see how much each product cost from the farmer and how much the grocer buys it.
The blockchain will allow food data to reach consumers and they will be able to choose from who they want to buy from.
EHH TOKEN
The EHH token on the platform will first be used to pay eHarvestHub for their services. Farmers, truckers, and grocers will also be able to make payments with EHH (this will attract several benefits such as discounts).
