There is definite potential, and geothermal can be used anywhere. It works better in some locations (where heat is closer to the surface) but drilling can be done anywhere. I would suspect that the reason it has not been used more widely is the high startup costs and specialized equipment. This likely makes it too expensive compared to gas/coal/ and nuclear options.
