Introduction to me

in #engineering6 years ago

I am a retired software engineer. I really like being retired as I have plenty of time to work on my projects whether they are software, my favorite, or home improvement and repairs. My sister characterized me recently as an ogre since I am not very social and prefer to stay home. I am online a lot and have plenty to do to keep me entertained.

I used to work on Java projects but the last couple of years of my career I was exposed to Go and really liked it after spending so much time with Java. Java to me became so unbelievably verbose and way over complicated. Once I learned enough Go it was easy to see how much better this was for the things I liked to do and I never looked back. It helps of course that being retired I can do what I want.

For about the first 15 or so years after my graduation, I was a Mechanical Engineer and was fortunate to be working on submarine design for the USN at Newport News Shipbuilding. The SEAWOLF program was one of the most difficult and challenging parts of my career and I must say in retrospect as fun as it was I was glad when it was over.

I earned a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1984 at Old dominion University in Norfolk VA.

I also spent 5 years enlisted in the USN serving in the engineering department of a fast Frigate, FF-1092, the USS Thomas C Hart. I enjoyed the Navy, made a Unitas cruise around South America and deployed to the Med twice.
