Its 10PM and I'm dealing with TWO emergency structural problems. One of them involves the vacate photo that I uploaded in my last blog. The building was shut down and evacuated NOT for the reason shown in the photo below.
What you are seeing:
If you follow my blog on a regular basis (you'll first realize that I dont post regularly!), then you would have noticed that I was working on masonry load bearing wall structures with wood joist floors. It seems I am the defacto engineer when it comes to emergencies lately and we went into this structure after a client was dissatisfied with the type of service he received from another engineer.
When we entered the building, we noticed the floor joist above us to be....severely deteriorated for a lack of a better word. Amazingly, the Department of Buildings did not find this to be a critical item! We ended up meeting with the DOB and tried our very best to convince them that this problem is SEVERE enough and systemic to the flooring system. This photo is from the report that details the severity of the floor system!!
This is a wood beam that has been so severely overloaded that it has split at the tension face of the extreme most fiber!
Daaaang. That looks bad. Usually I am trying to convey something is unsafe through a bunch of calculations and writeups. This picture tells the story pretty well.
no pictures needed here. this thing is BADDDDDD.
that's a lot of tension! how long do you had to stay there!?
a new frame was built inside the structure to support the floor, so while I was there for several hours, the threat of collapse has been removed!
does this work make you happy or.....???
Be careful, that seems very dangerous
Good content sharing :)
I'm the newcomer
Would you like to pay attention to me and give me some support?
Thanks :P

good day, pay attention to my account, I pay a fee for your votes from 50 to 70 % of the program sbdgiveaway, I will be glad to meet and communicate further)))
This is actually terrifying! I guess the people who built this messed up some of the math.
based on the way it failed, its less about the math, but more so about the structure must have been overloaded at one point!
What would they mean? They were storing grand pianos on the floor above or there was an earthquake?
They could have stored too many people over many many years. Over time wood begins to deform permanent and sag. This puts a joist in a suboptimal position to support the intended load and the compounding effect can cause oversees on a beam.
Thanks for the explanation! :)
wooww, nice shot @motoengineer
