La Cueva del Guácharo is the main tourist attraction of the municipality of Caripe in the state of Monagas. Declared a National Park by Decree No. 943 on May 27, 1975, it covers an area of 62,700 hectares and offers visitors a stunningly beautiful tour through the strange formations on the walls of the cave and the screaming of the birds that live there.
Speaking about birds, this place owes its name because of the Guácharo, a species of caprimulgiform bird of the Steatornithidae family, characteristic of South America and described by the great Alexander von Humboldt in 1799.
La Cueva del Guácharo is formed by limestone rocks, stalactite formations, stalactites, elicotites, etc.
The average temperature within this cavern is 20 degrees Celsius and has a varied ecosystem of bats, insects, rodents and arachnids, as well as a variety of tree species.
This important national park is under the continuous surveillance of the National Parks Institute (Inparques), and the Ministry of People's Power for Eco-Socialism and Water (Minea), which recommends that all visitors keep the place in perfect condition and do not damage the fauna or flora of the place.
