I dunno how anybody sees it but Based on personal experience, it is suicidal because it is not so common to be besties with someone of the opposite sex and you'll never at least once, feeling some sexual or romantic type of way towards them. However if you're strong enough to overcome those feelings, would your partner think the same of you?? No, insecurities is real.
So as far as I'm concerned, being with an opposite sex as a bestie is something that should end when you get into an Exclusive Relationship.

From experience, my fiance's bestie used to be a female. I wasn't cool with it initially. With time, when I came into the picture, the closeness reduced cos hey, dude now has a girlfriend and his bestie too found her heart-throb along the line.
This however might not be the case for everyone.
