The Chantels, out of the Bronx in New York, were formed in 1957 and continued to 1970. Singing their style of music, a mixture of soul, pop and doo wop with a gospel-choir like flair thrown into the mix, brought them a great deal of success in a very short time. The Chantels were an inspiration to many girl groups that would later be formed in that era. They were officially the second African American, all female group in U.S. music history and were also credited with being the inspiration behind many all male music groups, as well as mixed (male and female musical groups).
