My childhood favorite game - Vintage Edition

I didn't have much as a child, in fact, I didn't really get much of a chance of being a child due to complications in family life. There is much I remember at this point, but I do remember playing the game Stratego and loving it.

I've been looking for a while for the game, but the original edition is $150 and all the new editions are 30 pieces per side instead of 40 and use cheap pieces with stickers. I found a wooden boxed version called the "Vintage Edition" that was $45 but quickly shot up to $100+ during the holidays. I managed to a find a copy from a Chinese seller on eBay for only $35 shipped and just got it in a few days ago.

I played with my son for the first time in decades, and we both had a lot of fun. If you are not familiar with the game, you set up your 40 pieces in private for your side, and you try to find the other person's flag.

Flags are typically surrounded with bombs which can only be removed by the Eight-piece, better known as the miner.

You take turns either moving a piece one space or attacking a piece that is near you. The lower the number on your piece, the stronger the piece is. There is a special piece called the Spy that can only kill the One-Piece if it is the first to attack. Otherwise, it is killed by any other piece.

I am very happy with the set, it has the same look and feel of the original game that I remember. It uses the full 40 pieces per side and same print style.

My son and I play a lot of board and video games, and I think this one we will play a lot. We also got Imperial Assult for Christmas and Bloodborne Card Game. Haven't had a chance to play them yet as he has been hooked on Starbound again. We have played a lot of hands of Sushi Go though.

I'll post about the other games when I have had a chance to play them.

I have never play stratego, but strategy wise I enjoy risk a lot. Do Yo play risk? There is even online versions which I play from time to time

Never played Risk, always wanted to but no one seemed to want to play it.

Risk is a bit like Monopoly.
'How to ruin friendships'
:)

Monopoly was actually my favorite game when I was a child, but if you were lucky enough to be the first buying the expensive properties you will simply win easily.

With risk, there is always a chance of losing even if you are winning, because the other players can simple decide to attack you to level the playing field

Monopoly was also my favourite but my dad was super competitive so when I played at other people’s houses I would be used to pumping price through roof to give someone a house that gave them the set etc and they would just give it me for face value so I would win on like 5 rounds but without any real competition funny how everyone was taught to play so differently lol

You can just install the mobile game and play online. It’s really fun! And I think it’s the best strategy game there is

Oh wow I remember risk too I guess these were all pre internet game invasion lol

Wow this was so amazing game for childhood memories. thank you for shareing the picture.

@themarkymark my childhood has no fond memories on games as my parents were financially incapacitated which lead to alot of harassment.
Thanks for sharing them
I envy your childhood fun game though 🙌

this will be a perfect game. I believe. My country, I'll take it if it comes

It's really a fun game, unfortunately, it's really hard to get a copy of the original without paying a fortune.

I can do it all to play this fun game. strategy is my job! :)

Wao love for your child

Oh man, I could play this for hours! My neighbor had it and I had to go there to play with him, always wanted the game and once asked it for Christmas but my parents gave me Risk instead, which gave me another great board game experience.
Those two are really up there!

I always wanted to play Risk, I love complex games, but never got to play. Now I play games like X-Wing Miniatures, Marvel Dice Masters, Space Munchkins and so on.

I don't play board games anymore... who do you play it with? Son?

Interesting, I have never heard of Stratego game, looks cool.
I did play Risk and enjoyed it :-)

This seemed to be very exciting game of our childhood. Thank you @themarkymark.

Though ☺ you couldn't get much fun as a child
But am glad that you could fr your child, its a legacy 👍

Oh my goodness! I completely forgot about this game! My godfather and I used to play this for hours and hours on end! It took a long time for me to finally beat him! I miss it when times were simpler!

I have never heard of that before. My childhood memory was Monopoly. Haha played that tonnes!

Damn you just took me back me to lovely memory lane

I played Stratego a many times as a kid. Glad you enjoyed it with your son.

Hello sir it's good to see your post and it's very true that we don't forget what childhood because of many memories connected to it. Aligarh describe about the game stratego. And it sounds nice and as you described you had played with your son and you and him both enjoying it so much.

WOW, a blast from the past.

Is this a 2 player game? My wife and I have been looking for more games to play together and it's hard to find 2 player board games that are fun with only 2 people.

I'm not 100% sure this would be something she'd enjoy, but it looks like a lot of fun just seeing the pictures and hearing the overview.

This is really vintage, going to check if Stratego is our database.

One of the classic board games, back in the day when there were hardly any board games ! ... before the table top revolution !! (-:

In retrospect the game is a bit clunky and slow, but definitely great memories.

I always loved this game. It was easier than getting bogged down in a marathon game of Risk. One of mine and my brother's favorite old school strategy games was a game for the Sega Master System called Star Control.

Looks like a lot of fun. Board games that involve some level of skill and thinking are the best. Better than ones based solely on the chance role of the dice.
Sounds like a great way to spend time with your son too!

@themarkymark Thank you for sharing your memories. Always cool to reflect on the past. I look forward to seeing more posts from you. I grew up playing with my mom's copy from the mid-60's. The pieces look exactly like the ones you have now, with the exception of the box being different.

It's a great game, isn't it?

I'm a serious game fiend and Stratego still ranks as one of my favorite two player games. That is an awesome edition.

Wow, friend, you reminded me of my childhood in my country. Venezuela arrived at that game. You made me remember the many hours I spent playing with my cousins. These types of games have always caught my attention, even if it is video games I love history and what better way to revive it in a game.

Greetings from Venezuela, I hope we can continue reading our things.

Haha I played stratego as a kid I should have looked out to see if I still have it if it’s selling for £150

Our childhood favorite game was nine men's Morris.

We loved to play it with our parents. We used to improvise the board game using a paper and buttons.
Your post reminded me of that... it is a pleasant memory and I thank you for that.

Stratego has come a long way. Fantastic game which is still quite fun!
