Module 2 Essay

Morals

God has given us time on earth, intellectual and moral life, which, from our point of view, includes all other gifts. Since these are the three things that keep us alive, make us whole, and can't be understood without them, Nature and God have given each of us the right to protect our person, our freedom, and our property. If every man has the right to protect himself, his freedom, and his possessions with or without force, then other men also have the right to band together and form a common force to support this defense on a regular basis.

Organization

So, nothing could be clearer than this: The law is the organization of the natural right to a legal defense. It is the substitution of collective forces for individual forces with the goal of acting in the domain in which they have a right to act, doing what they have a right to do, to protect people's lives, freedoms, and property and keep each in its right so that justice can reign over everyone. Because under such a system, everyone would feel like he or she had all of the fullness and all of the responsibility of their lives. As long as everyone's safety was guaranteed, work was free, and the results of work were safe from all unfair attacks, no one would face any problems in the State.
When we're doing well, we shouldn't have to thank the government, but when things go wrong, we shouldn't think of putting the blame on the government any more than our peasants think of blaming hail or frost on the government. We should only know it through the great gift of Safety.

"Unhappily, law is by no means confined to its own sphere"(Bastiat Frédéric 2011 p.52). This is very true in a variety of ways. Law can be very complicated at times, but must be followed to a tee when doing so through business, or something professional. It hasn't left its rightful place just because some ideas about it are unclear or up for debate. It has done even more. It has done the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do; it has destroyed its own purpose; it has been used to destroy the justice it was supposed to create and to erase the limit it was supposed to uphold; it has put the power of the collective in the hands of those who want to trade without fear or remorse in the lives, freedoms, and property of others; it has turned theft into a way of life. All that we are aware of is the fact that this person is shrouded in mystery, and we can say with absolute certainty that this person is the most sought after, the most tortured, the most overwhelmed, the most admired, the most accused, the most invoked, and the most provoked of any person in the entire world. "But the most remarkable part of it is the astonishing blindness of the public through it all"(Bastiat Frédéric 2011 p.100). He is stating that the public often has their eyes closed when learning about certain events and are often very biased.

We have to deal with unbearable competition from a foreign competitor who seems to be in a much better position than us to make light, so much so that he floods our national market with it at a price that is a lot cheaper. As soon as he shows up, we lose all of our business, because all of our customers go to him, and a branch of our own industry, which has a lot of effects, stops growing all at once. This enemy, who is actually the sun, fights us fiercely, and we think that sneaky Albion is behind it, since he is careful around that haughty island but not with us. What we want is for you to pass a law that says all windows, skylights, dormer windows, outside and inside shutters, curtains, blinds, bull's-eyes, in short, all openings, holes, chinks, clefts, and fissures through which the sun has been used to get into houses, to the detriment of the good manufactures with which we like to think we have furnished our country a coffin for the sun. "Well, be it so; if consumers are interested in the free admission of natural light, the producers of artificial light are equally interested in its prohibition"(Bastiat Frédéric 2011 p.230). Consumers must always be eerie of this 'natural light' that Frédéric is refering to here, because it can harm or help them overall.

I disagree when you explained the concept of > "When we're doing well, we shouldn't have to thank the government, but when things go wrong, we shouldn't think of putting the blame on the government..." There are many instances when the government can really screw things up even if they had very limited control. Since we rely on them for our international safety, they can make some "strategic" decisions that backfire and the citizens have to pay the price for it. It is impossible for them not to make a mistake even if their power was severely limited for more than it is now. There always will be some form of blame and equally some form of thanks. The goal is to mitigate the quantity of both, as shared by Bastiat, since that means the government is not getting involved with much and is mostly hands off. Your commment on laws cancelling each other out is valid, however, it is impossible to create a structure where there is a limit to the amount of laws passed. Society is always changing and with change comes additional need for order, within a reason. The key is to work with the people to not overdue the legal aspect of things. In scenarios like the Patriot act, the government didn't even tell the citizens that they were actively spying on all of them and had their identification. This is far beyond the middle ground of finding a way to adhere to the needs of the citizens and is blatant sabotage to the values that founded this country. Overall, it is important to find a balance between government control and freedom of the people. Everyone should have the right to speak their mind and not be silenced, as this is the only way to combat tyranny. Throughout most of civilization, people were tortured and killed if they spoke out against their leadership. We finally live in a time where, if enough people complain, changes are made. Even if I don't agree with some of the changes that people avocate, I appreciate the ability for us to voice our opinions far greater than those policies being implemented. Bastiat thought similarly and even pushed it to the other side of the pendulum when he made comments about the society being mostly run by the people and barely any government interference. At the end of the day, we need to do our best to maintain balance.

This essay goes over Bastiat's law and how it has to do with entrepreneurship. The essay talks about how the law is what brings morals to people and keep people in check. The laws are what make the world somewhat safe and are important to the people. Some people may not agree with the laws but still follow them because they were put in place to protect the people. The rules are set in place so that people can protect each other. Many people tend to blame the government when things go wrong because they are in charge of everything. The law keeps people organized and doesn't make the system all over the place.

I completely agree with the above quote. Laws help everyone be safe and not have a world on fire. Without the law the world would be a complete mess. The law keeps us safe from unwanted attacks and helps the world stay sane. I will agree that when things get bad people immediately result into blaming the government. I think it's just easier for people to do this because they are the ones who put the laws into place. We should feel fortunate that even though we have laws we still have so much freedom.

I disagree with this I don't think we would lose all our business towards our competitors. If we stay confident in our exports and produce well we will be okay. Many people think just because a competitor has a lower price than us that we will lose against them which is not true at all.
Overall this essay hit the right amount of key points explaining the law.

<"It has done the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do; it has destroyed its own purpose...".> Laws were created in order to protect the people and their rights and property. Laws have started to cancel out themselves during recent years and people are worried about their rights and property, so therefore I also agree that the laws have destroyed their own purposes. The laws have changed and caused people to worry about protecting their rights which are being taken from them by the means of other laws, such as the women's right in order to have an abortion. <"When we're doing well, we shouldn't have to thank the government, but when things go wrong, we shouldn't think of putting the blame on the government...".> I also agree that the government should not be blamed on the occasion of when the people are doing bad, but the government should be blamed for the reason that the laws and decisions that the government created and chose cause the country be in a bad way. That is to say the people may have voted the government into office but did not expect the government to raise the price of gas. To that end the people do not have the ability to at all times blame the government for the choices that they make while they are in office.
