Other People's Money
Money is the thing that makes the world go round. Without it, maybe we would struggle, but in no time, we would adapt and overcome. I mean, that is what human society has done for as long as we have been on this earth. Time has changed; we have evolved into what you could call money-hungry people. There are numerous ways to come across money, and some people choose to do so in various ways. Whether it is illegal or legal, in today's world, it almost seems like it does not matter as long as you are coming across the money.
Society is built around money, and people like Mr. Garfield take advantage of people and their companies to make themselves rich off of stock shares and buy the company out. While some do not see it as "fair or ethical," capitalists do this type of thing every day. Is it something we see daily? Not quite, but it is happening as this discussion is being typed out. I know the flow of money and how it works as a work of art. People become so obsessed with cash and the idea of what it can achieve or give them that they would do anything to have it in their possession. You would think it stops when people taste it, but that is precisely the thing… they got a taste of money. Now the problem is how do I keep it or get more? That is where people find themselves in some legal trouble or not.
In Mr. Garfield's case, he is precisely that person who loves other people's money! He swooped in and bought out companies or ran them dry by holding all of their stocks for his benefit. In this case, he is legally battling to take over a wire and cable company. However, the owner of the Wire and Cable company does not have it. During everything going on, Mr. Garfield finds himself falling for the lawyer working against him and ends up causing romantic trouble between them. With both still so convinced of taking each other down. In the end, Mr. Garfield won the election of the "evolution of technology" speech to buy out the Wire and Cable company, which leads him not to know how to feel about the situation because Kate did not speak to him after the election. However, in the end, Mr. Garfield receives a call from Kate, and she offers him a new deal involving introducing airbags to the world. The offer was that Mr. Garfield sells the company back and they modernize and start to produce airbags. They also offered him his shares back at twenty-eight dollars! It was an offer Mr. Garfield knew he needed to take, so he did just that and received a lunch date with Kate.
As I stated earlier in the paper, the art of how people do business to keep money flowing is astonishing to me. Some people do not care about money and what it brings, so having someone like Mr. Garfield who loves it and the idea of having other people's money is a crazy thought. Everyone is molded differently and has morals on funds, which is excellent. We are entitled to our opinions and beliefs, even if it does not seem right, precisely because it does to somebody else. I mean, imagine how the world would be if there were no people like Mr. Garfield. I honestly think that society would collapse and be unable to function for the sole purpose of stopping money flow. Believe it or not but that is what this country is running on. It is not only the president nor the government but the businesses that we have and the employers of Wall Street that keep this country running.
One of the main concerns in the community where the Wire and Cable company is based is all of the people who will lose their jobs. Maybe that was the only stable income in those people's lives that would hurt them to lose their job, but what about their families? I honestly see both sides of the story. I understand Mr. Garfield's reasoning and the people of the Wire and Cable company. Yes, they would be losing their jobs, which would not be suitable for them now. However, is that because that is what they have been comfortable with their whole lives, or do they genuinely care about the company? Everyone is just trying to support themselves or the family they might have at home. It must be seen that, yes, it is a loss at that very moment, but people fail to see the light that beams from the end of the tunnel. Nothing is ever as wrong as it may seem. That is what Mr. Garfield tried to explain in his speech towards the end of the movie. With that being said, I believe that is what got all of the community's people to vote for him. Does Mr. Garfield love money? Absolutely but people like him are evolutionists. They always look for better opportunities in society, a better way to make money, etc. Just think about it. That is why he took the deal at the movie's end.
The idea of entrepreneurship is how to revolutionize something, in my opinion—finding something that works and consistently trying to find ways to make it better and benefit from it. That is America and human society, in general, worldwide. Everyone is trying to find ways to make money and live a better life. Everyone just has their own different ways of doing such a thing.
