The 6 most polluting products we use in our daily lives

in #environment7 years ago

Hello guys!

Today I just want to talk to you about something that I find very important and interesting to share: the (non-exhaustive) list of the 8 most polluting products that we use daily (maybe more women than men but). I am sure you already know about some of them, but personally, I was quite surprised when I saw some of them.

We all know that the earth and oceans are more than polluted. Today everyone knows it. And even if you think it is not going to make a change if only you change your consumption customs, when you will see the numbers of the use of that product for only one person, you will quickly change your mind!

Just as a remark, the products are not classed in order of importance.

#1 Plastic bottles

As you know, plastic bottles are quite difficult to recycle and are frequently found in oceans, adding damages to an already very damaged environment. Moreover, I don’t know if you have already seen the actual the controversy about waters in plastic bottles! Researchers all around the world are saying that the water in these plastic bottles is frequently contaminated by some plastic molecules. So even for us, it is not really good to consume water conserved in plastic bottles! Old plastic bottles that are re-used a lot of times are also known to be more problematic to our health.

So, to resolve this issue, don’t hesitate to buy a gourd or a glass bottle, that you can clean and re-use ad infinitum. I personally buy myself a plastic bottle with a little compartment when I can put some fruits or vegetables in there to give a great taste to my water!

#2 Make-up remover pads

These little pieces of cotton are frequently used in the morning and before going to sleep. I personally use it no more than one per day, but I have discovered on the Internet that apparently, a standard woman uses 6 pads of that kind per day, to erase her make-up or to take care of her skin. It is really huge! And I think that each woman can make an effort by buying some tissue make-up remover pads: it is easily washable, and you can buy them in some specialized shops for a few euros. You can also make your own!

#3 Plastic straws

It is becoming more and more known that straws are truly polluting. We all saw this picture of a poor turtle that has a straw stuck into its nose! This issue is especially huge in the United States, where the consumption of these things seems quite incredible when you see the numbers: each day, the American people would use 500 million straws! They use it for everything and in every street shops. In Europe, our consumption of straws is a little less important, but there are still some great alternatives that you can give a try: stainless-steel straws, for example! Some restaurants begin to have them.

I’m always bluffed by this one because when you think of it, a straw is like the less useful object in the world! Who really needs that to drink? (exception made for the elderly and sick people of course).

#4 Q-Tips

The same issue is remarked with the Q-Tips. Apparently, some people throw them in the toilets, and these little things may arrive in the sea. As for the strays, they can easily enter into some animals holes (nose, mouth, ears,…) and remain stuck there. This is really bad for marine animals and for the ocean's environment.

I never saw that but I think there is an alternative to that, but I am not familiar with: metallic Q-Tips that you can wash and re-use during all your life. I find it a little bit scary, but I think this environmental issue is maybe the chance to give it a try.

#5 Toothbrushes

Toothbrushes are totally not recyclable because they are composed of different types of plastic. And clearly, when you see the toothbrushes today, you can easily realize that no one really needs all the rubber grips the producers put on toothbrushes! Almost 5 billion toothbrushes land in the in-landfill sites (each year!).

A great alternative to toothbrushes is the sustainable bamboo toothbrushes. You don’t need more than a wood a handle to make the job!

#6 Disposable razors

Disposable razors are perfect for lazy people like me. But as anything that is disposable, you can guess that they pollute a lot and that they are recyclable with difficulty. An easy solution is to stop buying those things and start using an electric epilator or razor, and maybe it will take you more time, but at least with an epilator, you are quiet for a few weeks!

I hope you have enjoyed this article and that you (maybe) will apply those simple hacks to reduce your ecological footprint!

The earth is beautiful. Lets do our part to keep it amazing.

Thanks for sharing. I honestly didn't know that about toothbrushes. I now feel guilty for brushing my teeth 😂

It's a really exciting lesson, unfortunately, people either do not care about the destruction of the environment, or they do not understand where it will go by continuing this way.I like the content of your post and I'm glad that this theme has been touched

Yeah humans tend to think more about themselves than the nature.

But as it seems people are starting to care about nature more and more as the time goes

This is a great awareness post. It's sad to see the image of the creature trapped in our man-made rubbish.

People are waking up about their environment and the ecosystem.

I definitely will apply them for sure @jarendesta. Straws and Plastic bottles are a really huge problem huh? I didn't know tooth brushes were also culprits, to think I just got a new one. I'll definitely change them less frequently . now. I thought the number of straws (500 million) per year is ridiculous. So many? And what about the 5 billion toothbrushes that land in the inland? We really need to consider how we affect the ecosystem and environment around us.

We should take care of everything that we throw out and know that it has a big impact on our environment and all living creatures. Last holidays I was on Mallorca and I saw a lot of rubbish and plastic over the sea coast. It was really sad to see and of course, I changed my mind about my attitude to pollution. Clean and fresh will be more satisfying.

Thanks for this article. I'm really glad that you mentioned this issue. Keep doing :)

recycling is a good way to decrease the pollution on environment.
plastics are as a monomar of Ethine..By Ploymarized it create a heavy bond.So it is not rotting.
so we should know the effect for this..
your article gives a valuable hings.
