RE: Plastic use and its harmful aspects in everyday life

in #environment6 years ago

'I'll tell you what me scares me is plastic. Plastic bags and plastic bottles and these things. Why does my water have to be in a bloody plastic bottle? The landfill and the ocean. And I don't know, I'm just terrified with the proliferation of plastic.' -- Helen Mirren

Plastic, in and of itself, is not a problem. The problem is the improper use of plastic and the belief that it is disposable because it is inexpensive.

Many things that are stored and sold in plastic, could be contained in glass... and that glass could have a deposit to encourage it's return and reuse.

We should also apply a "cleanup" charge to any disposable products to capture the true cost of those products. Right now, businesses use plastic as a disposable option because we are effectively subsidizing its creation by not including the cost of remediation in the production.

It is good to acknowledge and inform folks about the harms of disposable culture. It is better to avoid those traps yourself. It is best to work towards changing the culture so that the problem is never created.

Each day, we work on improving. Keep it up!
