What the Community Needs in the Active Block Producers

Current Criteria

Many efforts are underway in the EOS community to prepare for the June 1st launch. Block Producers (BPs) are popping up all over the map and the total number, as shown in this EOSGov report, is 149.

EOSGov is doing a great job lining up criteria for BPs. Here is a list of their criteria:

  1. Official block producer candidate name.
  2. Location of company headquarters.
  3. Expected location of servers.
  4. Type of servers (cloud, bare metal, etc).
  5. Current employee list and pictures of at least 67% of staff.
  6. Relevant background qualifications for at least 67% of staff.
  7. Block Producer Candidate Roadmap on values, community project timeline, finances, transparency, or any other topic the candidate deems important.
  8. Position on Dividends ("vote buying").

Elephant in the Room

Position on Dividends. Should a DAC run for a BP? EOS holders with more than 100 EOS were given free eosDAC. While I agree the eosDAC airdrop was aimed at all token holders. I do feel that there is now a larger incentive for the community as a whole to vote for eosDAC over other Block Producers.

I do believe eosDAC has honest intentions. I want the community to not only vote for the BPs but also have a controlling stake.

I am not against DACs (Decentralized Autonomous Corporations) and want there to be more of them. DACs are a new way to run companies on the blockchain. I am quite impressed with how the DASH community runs their DAC.

I want to know what you the Steem community thinks so write your comments below.

Additional Criteria for BP Candidates

First and foremost, the EOS blockchain is run by the community for the community. Now that most of the code is written by block.one, the BP Candidates have taken responsibility for the launch of the network. The first public project where the community needed to finance an important asset for the community was EOS Voting Portal.

The community came together and made it easier for token holders to vote. The volunteers involved in coding and doing the work are the communities most important asset. As such, I feel there is a separation of BP Candidates. Those who participate to build the community and those who are heavy into community outreach. Both aspects are needed.

The problem is when all of the active 21 BPs voted in are the publicist BP candidates. Who will do the work when the people voted in are not primarily developers? A balance is a must in BP candidates.

We need to highlight and value more BP candidates who are developing community projects. Voters must research whether BP candidates are working on community projects or simply attaching their names to community projects. I do not feel that enough media attention is focused on community projects and highlighting which BP candidates participated.

I found it interesting the parallels between politics and EOS BP candidacy. This quote by John Philpot Curran resonated with me: “The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance.”

We must be informed, involved, and active to build the freer future EOS will provide. Are there any other aspects that BPs need to fulfill other than what is above? Comment below and let's discuss.
