The late great comedian George Carlin (RIP) explained everything we need to know about the Philosophy of the blockchain universe,
"I interface with my database and my database is in cyberspace so I'm interactive, I'm hyperactive and from time-to-time I am radioactive...I've been uplinked and downloaded, I've been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I'm a hightech lowlife, a cutting-edge state-of-the-art bicoastal multitasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond!" (George Carlin - Modern Man)
The Cyberspace Universe
George just about sums it up. But whenever you talk about any universe and the act of creation you are either talking about the primary, secondary or tertiary creators or developers who make it happen.
Primary Creator
That's the Person hiding behind intelligent design and a few works attributed to Them like the Bible, Gita, Torah, Koran, BTC etc. Let's just call Them "Anonymous". Anonymous makes all other subsequent creations possible.
Secondary Creators
For example, thanks to Bitcoin we now have over a thousand other coins created by secondary creators thanks to a crazy idea called Open Source, which is a lot like DNA replication with purposeful mutations. Every blockchain cryptocoin is a direct or mutant copy of the original Adam coin of Bitcoin.
Tertiary Creators
The rest of us miners and bloggers just come and squat after they build it and then claim the real estate as our own despite not having created even 1 speck of sand or 1 bit of code in digital terms, which would be a good definition of a "hightech lowlife" or Tertiary Creators. 😃
The OS Religion
Every universe has its God, empowered demigods and assorted and sundry species who are bound together by a religion. In cyberspace the closest thing we have to a unifying religion is Open Source.
In OS space there is essentially only one team and one project to benefit the whole Universe. Many hightech lowlifes and even some secondary creators are asleep to that and get exclusively focused on their personal interests in their little sliver of the OS pie.
But factually, every slice of the OS pie belongs to the Creator and thus all of us, the created beings. Spiritual communism of knowledge for capitalistic application. So we owe a great day and a few good upvotes to the higher creators who help to give us digital life and keep up breathing the fresh air of cyberspace! Thanks @dan and all other developers for all you did, do and will do. You deserve everyone's appreciation and no disparagement at all.
What we are collectively developing is nothing less than a universe - the Blockchain Universe. Bitshares, Steem and EOS are planets in that universe at specific stages of development. Everything has value because they demonstrate varieties of possibilities for future creations.
Thanks for Watching and Reading!

Fascinating extended metaphor!
We must try to create value in this world, open source is one great way to do that. Also, we can't forget about the original source, our Mother Earth, but if we take care of her, this new cyber world shows much promise!
Mining needs to be rethought. Needs to be more like a lottery. The power required to mine 1 BTC with increasing difficulty is ridiculously wasteful and against nature.
Higher order thinking! Who couldn't love good ole' George? Keeping it real all the time. 2018 poses a lot of challenges for decentralization and OS. From the boys & girls on Wallstreet, The Fed, and "disruptive" big tech giants like Facebook who continue to profit from our data and show disdain for privacy.
We need to tread carefully. Regardless, thanks for sharing a thought-provoking read.
interesting perspective.
