Account Creation Costs

Dan Larimer proposed today a three step plan for lowering EOS account creation costs.

  1. Increase RAM supply.

Block one has released an update to the EOSIO system contract that enables block producers to specify a rate-of-increase for RAM. Every block new RAM will be added to the system which will lower the price given the same demand. Dan recommend a rate of 64GB per year. With this supply EOS blockchain will either take in over 23,000,000 EOS per year selling RAM at current price or the price of RAM will fail.

  1. Lower Account Memory Usage

EOS blockchain hard codes a RAM usage of 3KB per account where 1,5KB is reserved for future expansion. According to Dan, this was an overly conservative estimate. Doing closer auditing of actual RAM usage per account they have concluded that only 512 bytes are required for each new account. Block.one will provide an update that will create 1,5KB of RAM per account. This will reduce the minimum account creation RAM requirements by almost 50%. They expect to be ready July 31st.

  1. Free Accounts With Block.one's iOS Wallet

Block.one is building a free iOS hardware wallet using Apple's Enclave. Dan believe that they will be able to offer free EOS accounts to unique users of our iOS wallet.
