EOS Launch Update - There is Such a Thing as Being Too Careful

in #eos7 years ago (edited)

Update on EOS Mainnet Launch - Security audit call at 1300UTC completed just now! Next joint call 0100 UTC in about 10 hours. "GO" then will mean we get the ball rolling.

At this point, "GO" would probably be a good idea.

You can never be too careful...well, yes, actually you can. At this point, more people got hurt from the phishing scam than anything...and the next risk is analysis paralysis and EOS brand damage. When you get to be a $15 Billion dollar enterprise, expectations matter! Sometimes more than anything.

There were never expectations of days, let alone weeks of bug testing. If that was the plan of the BPs, a better job of expectation setting should have been done. The one thing I've learned about Engineers after working with them for 20+ years is that if you give them 12 months to develop next years model, they will tell you it will take 16 months and they will then deliver in 24 months. Perfectionists by nature, but nothing is ever perfect and they have a real problem with "its good enough for the market, we can tweak on the run."

I am Lord @matthewwarn and I have Stackitis...but there are worse problems to have in life...like not believing even a half built Deathstar can destroy Alderaan.

Thank you for stopping by...vote "Go" lol

One of my customers said it best: "done is better than perfect".

I've heard that before and its so true.

Let there be launch!

No Shit...I mean there's 5 years of BTS and Steemit tech behind EOS, there are not going to be major revelations that can't be fixed on the run. Dan's probably got version 2.0 and 3.0 in his drawer already. This has got to be driving him nuts.

It's always good to treat things with a bit of caution. Here we are talking about a week delay in the launch of a major blockchain. In the world of IT or other technological projects, this is just nothing! I believe it is good that they audit the chain and also the voting portals, because that is critical for users. It might be pointless, but if anything goes wrong, you don't want to be in the position to admit, that you haven't tried everything possible to prevent the issue.

Then they should have told the community they were going to take X number of days or weeks, in the spirit of caution, to mentally masturbate over the launch.

My point is that the expectations are not matching reality and that it is a branding issue, not a technical one. It usually happens when technical people are in charge and not people also looking after the marketing aspect of a project.

It was totally preventable and is the difference between managing expectations and meeting them. Its a rookie mistake and not acceptable for a $15 billion dollar enterprise.

If Block.one has to do their hack-a-thon on a test network or worse delay it...it will only act as FUD fodder.

Very valid points! The issue certainly has arisen from the fact, that b1 isn't officially part of the launch, with the end of the ICO, they are finished (at least as regards their obligations), they have the money, and that's it. After that it's the community and especially the BPs who are in charge, and although there are a few bright lights among them, they still are far from the means and expertise that, that b1 would have. You are absoultely right, they should have had a basic project plan on how to roll out the chain, and they hadnt. On the other hand if you look at the timeline, the first bps appeared early march, and most got in later, and we had 3 releases since that, so they were tied up with basic technical implementation....

Let’s hope all these checks ensures the mainnet succeed!
Go!

There's 100+ BP candidates and each want to go through it a few more times...

Its wise and smart to triple check everything on EOS before mainnet. Rushing into a brickwall is not. Thx for the info.

Agreed, to triple check is smart...they are on 20x check at the moment debating on whether or not to go to 50x. If the BPs for EOS turn into the same style BPs for SteemIt and BitShares, the project will not reach its full potential.
