I wonder why whales would not - at this stage of the ICO - take a follow up round to dump a Huuge amount of ETH in. Other whales do not necessarily follow as they many have shot their wad already and getting an acceptable number of coins becomes less easy when one party has contributed a lot already.

Or would whales want to have more security on the actual price they will get in the end (and thus are more inclined to invest in the then current round)?

Many whales are waiting for EOS to hit the secondary markets so they can work the exchanges. Expect epic pump and dumps as the whales accumulate.
