: Do you think many foreign corporations, including BMW and Mercedes Benz, overlook Korean customers? If you do, what could be the reasons? If not, why is this issue scandalous?
I think many foreign corporations overlook Korean customers. As we can see in the article, the attitude of BMW dealing with fire accidents in Korea is slow and passive. I do not think the other foreign companies are different from it. There are some reasons why they overlook Korean customers.
There is no official institute that analyzes and judges defects in cars under Korean government. Inspection is conducted by BMW’s Korean service centers. However, the problem is the BMW vehicles models that were not supposed to be recalled were on fire. It is getting difficult to trust BMW. Korean government should have a neutral third party that executes the inspection on BMW vehicles.
Second, current punitive law regarding damages is a slap on the wrist. BMW provided new parts only to one third of the inspected cars. If South Korea had strict punitive law regarding damages, BMW would not deal with this defection case in Korea in that way. Also Korean government should raise penalty fee for defection in vehicles.
Overall, South Korean government should set up a third party inspection center and change punitive law regarding damages more strictly. By doing so, Korean customers can be protected from foreign corporations that have overlooked them.
