Bleezer’s Ice Cream; an essay
Has anyone ever eaten a cotton candy carrot custard ice cream cone? Probably not, so
instead just read about it in Jack Prelutzky’s poem named ”Bleezer’s Ice Cream”. This free
verse poem is about an ice cream store that sells bizarre flavours of ice cream. This poem is my
top pick for the day because it has three qualities that make it a good read. When I read it I
enjoyed how it had been well-written, interesting, and memorable.
What makes this poem well-written is for a couple of reasons. As I read it the rhymes
flowed smoothly and created funny images in my mind. There is a good variety of food
vocabulary present in verses. Even though there are many different foods in the poem no words
are repeated throughout. It’s not confusing to read, and just about every sentence rhymes.
Creativity is exploding from the words of this poem with lines such as ”almond ham meringue
salami”(line 17). The “yam anchovy prune pastrami”(line 18) sounds pretty tasty right now.
One thing is the flavours in Jack’s poem sound like they really don’t belong in ice cream,
but that’s what makes it interesting. The person narrating the poem is named Ebenezer Bleezer,
it suits the poem well. The last name Bleezer sounds like freezer, and ice cream is stored in a
freezer. Who would not want to go to Ebenezer Bleezer’s ice cream store and try some whacky
flavours just for the fun of it. The whole poem makes me think of a freezer full of colourful
messed up ice cream. I can just imagine a vast array of ridiculously, revolting combinations of
my favourite foods.
Jack’s poem is very memorable indeed. Before finding it and reading it I would have
never thought about a scoop of “cauliflower cola mustard”(line 30) ice cream. Just think how that
slop would taste! See? It’s already memorable and you haven’t even read it yet, or have you?
Anyway, not once have I ever imagined that a poem like Bleezer’s existed. It makes a person
think how original and clever the writing is. I now would like to try some ice cream like the types
described in the poem.
So in ending, the lines were well-written and easy to follow. All the inventive flavours
came together and made it both interesting and memorable. There was a gross mishmash of
tastes but that’s what makes it all so attractively unusual. I recommend reading Jack’s poem
“Bleezer’s Ice Cream’ and maybe end up with a little nausea afterwards.
