MOSCOW - The Russian government accused US defense contractors of pressuring Indonesia to cancel the contract of purchase of about 11 Sukhoi Su-35 Flanker-E fighter jets. Moscow praised Indonesia's unshakable pressure.
This allegation was made by Vladimir Kozhin, the aide of Russian President Vladimir Putin for military and technical cooperation.
The plan, 11 units of advanced Russian jet fighters will be sent on October 5, 2018 which coincides with the anniversary (HUT) of the Indonesian National Army (TNI). "The contract has been signed and we are starting to implement it," Kozhin told Rossiya-24 channel. He said Russia had negotiated an agreement with Indonesia over the past two years despite opposition from the United States. "This contract is being prepared for two years, it's a complicated contract, some modern Su-35 fighter jets, and everything has been prepared," Kozhin said. "When everything is ready, American partners enter the scene and put unprecedented pressure on the Indonesian side to prevent this contract going on." Nevertheless, the agreement has been successful. "We are grateful to the Indonesian military and political leaders for their solid position, which they are not afraid to declare openly, including to American partners," Kozhin said, quoted Wednesday (14/3/2018). Indonesia tends to make its choice open and ensure it will not rely too heavily on any supplier. TNI currently operates the old version of Flanker series including the Sukhoi Su-27 and Su-30 variants, but Indonesia also operates F-16 Fighting Falcons and Northrop F-5s US-made Lockheed Martin fighter jets. "Indonesia really keeps its options open because Chinese eyes are increasing and seeing Russia become more active in conflict and international competition," said Sam Bendett, a researcher specializing in the Russian military at the Center for Naval Analysis to The National Interest.
In addition, many Indonesian neighbors also modernize their combat equipment with Western and Russian equipment.
