Hello everyone
I have been extremely busy following workshops and working on my business plan. Right now I’m building a solid marketing plan and creating the brand “Walky”. What do I want people to feel when I ask them about Walky? Why should the community use my app? I will often use the word “community” because that is what it’s all about. Technology companies often talk about “users” but I do not want to use that terminology. For me, they are much more than that.
The app, brand and company will be built following the 3 pillars of sustainability.
- Governance
- Social relationships
- Environment
Sustainability is a hot topic these last few years. A lot of companies use this word and claim to be sustainable but often they do not know what it really means. It’s not just about the environment. It’s a lot more than that.
Governance means everything related to the management of a business. It’s basically running your company in an ethical way. Let’s take the example of data management.
Facebook. Do you think they are ethical? I don’t think so. We all discovered how Facebook handles our data. They sell it or use it to their own advantage crossing every privacy line.
Because we as a company will also be handling a lot of data, we need to have a clear guideline on how to work with it. Transparency will be key here. We will make it a statement that no data will ever be sold or misused within the company. We will be clear on what data we will be using to make our own product better but always considering the privacy of our community as a vital part through this process.
Social relationships. This is every connection between the company and our stakeholders. As a sustainable business we want to have an impact. We want to change how people think, move and feel. We want to work with local business, communities and charities. Because it takes a lot of work and time to interact with all of our stakeholders and foremost to do it right, the app will only be available in Belgium. In time, this will change of course. Depending on the speed of our growth, we will expand to more countries and apply the same local aspect of our business.
We also have internal stakeholders like our staff. They are the most important factor of the company so it’s a no-brainer that we need to treat them as good as possible. We want to create a certain culture within the company of sustainability (like providing support when they go to work by bike). To keep it simple, we want to have happy employees.
Environment. Very important these days. Especially in Belgium where young teenagers are protesting and skipping school to give a clear signal to our government. We also want to provide our support to a healthier world. To give some examples, one of our goals is to use electricity that is 100% green. Reducing paper waste, etc.
So to summarize, what do we want people to think when we ask them about Walky? Walking. Sustainability. Green. Honest. Engaged with the community.
In order to put ourselves out there, we need a logo and mission statement that fits our vision on how we see and would like to see the world.
I can happily announce we have a new improved logo.

As you can see, everything we stand for is incorporated within the logo.
- The “W” tells people we are passionate to get people walking.
- The green color is to be associated with sustainability.
- A font-style that gives that friendly, easy accessible feeling.

Walky can be the motivator and incentive to get people walking. We would like to reach out to local communities and work together to create a positive impact on people’s health. Sustainability will be the way on how we stand out and operate.
Running. Walking. Movement. That’s what it’s all about. People deserve the strength to change their lifestyle. We want to help them in taking those first steps.
