The treasures found inside the white Chedi at Wat Prayurawongsawas, สมบัติที่พบในเจดีย์สีขาวที่วัดประยูรวงศาวาส

This is how the inside of the white Chedi or Pagoda looks after the renovation. Below is how the Chedi looks nowadays.

To recap: this temple was built in 1828 by a well known feudal lord who became the ancestor of a large clan of Bunnag family line. It might be of some interest that the earliest ancestor in this family tree was a Persian merchant who entered into the palace to work for the old Siamese King. He married local Thai and settled down in Siam; very much like the Chinese and Portuguese merchants who came to live in Siam more than five hundred years ago. I have friends who have Portuguese ancestors and some who have Pakistani great-great grandfather.

Back to the Chedi: it’s full name is Phra Mahathat Chedi, which was damaged by lightening and neglected for 47 years. In 1907, a new abbot repaired the damaged Chedi and put Buddha relics together with old treasures from late Ayutthaya period inside the Chedi. A piece of slate with a predictive horoscope of the time in which someone would discover the secret crypts in the future was also placed inside the Crypt.

One hundred years past, the white Chedi was badly tilted on one side and looked like it would break very soon. Luckily, a new abbot has invited Buddha relics from Ceylon and wished to place them inside the Chedi. So, a big and expensive renovation project was started in 2007. The digging found two crypts inside the Chedi; the first crypt was discovered on the 5 November and the second crypt was discovered on the 7 November. They also found the astrological prediction on an old piece of slate there!

The original Buddha relics discovered was covered with gold wrapping inside a special container. Also inside Crypt 1, they found big and small antiques of 270 Buddha statues. These Buddha statues were the remnants from the good old days during the old capital Ayutthaya.

In side Crypt 2, they found three gold sheets palm-sized with messages and the date 1 March 2504 (1961) which was Buddhist religious day of Makapuja, a full moon day in the fourth lunar month of that year. They also found over one thousand small Buddha images inside monks’ begging bowls. People would normally wrapped these in plastic cases with gold frames and used as protective amulets to be worn around the neck on a string or gold necklace. These antique Buddha amulets would fetch very high prices on the market!

Having landed with lots of precious Buddha statues and amulets, the abbot decided to establish a museum to display these treasures for the public. The old library was then turned into a small museum. The original Buddha relics were returned to the top of the white Chedi after the renovation. The Buddha relics from Ceylon was placed inside the glass room in the museum.

I was really awe struck by all the energies of old Buddha statues and the good intention of older generations of Siamese who wanted to make sure people in the future generations would know about past cultural inheritance and their religious values. These big pieces would certain fetch lots of money in the black market for antiques.

Judging by the periods of some statues, I was surprised that these survived the ransacking and burning of Ayutthaya. It was recorded that the attackers took seven days and nights to ransack and burn temples in Ayutthaya to peel all the gold and metal from pagodas and Buddha statues.

Many people dug holes to hide valuable objects, that’s why there were so many treasure hunters after the battles in Ayutthaya. Once in a while, we would hear about some secret crypts unearth with golden treasures in Ayutthaya. But during the last hundred years, most of the remaining antiques were systematically removed and sold in the black markets.

หนึ่งร้อยปีผ่านไป พระเจดีย์เริ่มเอียงและแตกร้าวอยู่ในสภาพที่ต้องซ่อมแซมก่อนจะเสียหายมากจนอาจจะต้องรื้อทิ้ง กอร์ปกับเจ้าอาวาสคนใหม่ได้อัญเชิญพระบรมสารีริกธาตุมาจากศรีลังกา จึงอยากจะอัญเชิญขึ้นไปประดิษฐานที่ยอดเจดีย์ ในปี 2550 จึงมีโครงการบูรณะพระมหาธาตุเจดีย์ การขุดเข้าไปข้างในทำให้พบกรุซ่อนของมีค่าสองกรุ กรุแรกแตกในวันที่ 5 พฤศจิกายน ส่วนกรุที่2 แตกในวันที่ 7 พฤศจิกายน

ในกรุที่ 1 เขาพบพระพุทธรูปหลายขนาดถึง 270 องค์ และพบพระบรมสารีริกธาตุที่ถูกหุ้มด้วยทอง ใส่อยู่ในอูบ และมีกระดานชนวนที่มีการทำนายฤกษ์ยามว่า ใครจะเป็นคนมาพบกรุสมบัติในเวลาใดในอนาคต

ในกรุที่ 2 เขาพบพระเครื่อง หรือพระพิมพ์กว่าพันองค์ ใส่อยู่ในบาตรพระ และมีแผ่นทองคำขนาดเท่าฝ่ามือ มีการจารึกว่า วันพุธที่ 1 มีนาคม 2504 ซึ่งตรงกับวันเพ็ญเดือนสี่ เป็นวันมาฆบูชา เมื่อพบสมบัติโบราณในกรุถึง สองกรุ พร้อมพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ ท่านเจ้าอาวาสจึงใช้ห้องสมุดเก่าที่วัดจัดสร้างเป็น พิพิธภัณฑ์พระจากกรุ ให้ ประชาชนได้มาเรียนรู้ศึกษา อดีตและวัฒนธรรมของคนโบราณในยุคของอยุธยาตอนปลาย ชื่อเต็มของที่นี่คือ พิพิธภัณฑ์พระ ประยูรภัณฑาคาร.
