In some point in our lives, we’ve been guilty of some of those undesirable character associated to Filipinos. Let’s admit it, this is something that we should look into in order for us to advance into a better society or country as a whole.
Most of those bad habits that you can find below are actually happening, I mean Filipinos are doing it and it’s one of the reasons why we are still a developing country which means a less developed country as opposed to our neighboring countries like Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan.
Maybe if we will change these bad habits, we would be able to compete with those countries mentioned above as to economic standing, etc. if not then these habits will continue to pull us down not only personally but also as a nation.
Good Characteristics
But before I will go through those bad habits which is the main subject of this post I would like to cite first those characters that made us awesome. Filipinos just like any other nationalities, are not perfect, however we also have great characteristics every one of us should be proud of.
So here are some of the most well-known positive traits or characteristics of Filipinos:
Hospitable
Filipinos are famous for their hospitality. Visitors that will come to our country will surely experience and appreciate how hospitable or friendly we are. This values has been around for thousands of years. Filipinos are showing these qualities not only to foreigners but also to co-Filipinos. No wonder why a lot of foreigners want to marry a Filipina not to mention being romantic and caring.

Strong Family Ties
Filipinos value their families so much that they incline to preserve families and keep it intact through the generations. They love to spend quality time together. Filipinos also love parties and a lot of family reunions almost happening every year and that really proves this value.
Aside from that, families also used to go to church together, this creates a strong bond between family members.
Respectful
This is often observed by people of all ages that means not only younger people. Filipinos used to say “po” or “opo” (means “yes”) when answering especially to elders.
Filipinos also show respect to elders by putting their elder’s hands on their forehead. Although I see some those who are not practicing this but majority of Filipinos are doing it as a sign of respect.
Strong Work Ethic / Workaholic
Filipinos are also known to be hard working. Filipinos abroad are the living proof for such important characteristic. Their willingness to work the whole day just to be able to provide their family’s needs back home proves that we are indeed hardworking.
Generous
Filipinos are generally generous people. Even when we have very little or even when we don’t have anything to offer, we always find a way to be able to share and help people who are in dire need.
Compassionate (Loving and Caring)
Do you agree with me if I will say that Filipinos are the sweetest and most loving people in the world? I’m sure Filipinos like me will have a positive response to this question and for everyone else, you need to know us well, or better still visit us in the Philippines so you will figure it out.
Habits indeed are hard to break, in fact a lot of people who have bad habits are not even aware they possess them.
Most of the times bad habits are annoying, these habits are brimming with negativity. However, as I’ve said earlier we must admit that we could also be guilty to having any of them.
Negative Traits of Filipinos
Every country has its divergent values and labels, definitely the Philippines is no exception. Below are few of the most well-known negative traits of Filipinos.
Crab Mentality
Although this is dominant in politics where politicians tend to pull each other down to clear the way for their own advancement this is also happening among regular people. And honestly I see it too in the life of Filipinos abroad.
It is sad to note that there are some of us Filipinos who got a bitter view at competition. We seem to have this attitude that if we can’t win then no one should.
I want to be on top! This seems to be what’s in our minds. Such that we do our best to be able to pull other people down instead of helping each other, instead of treating other people’s success as an inspiration for us to reach our own goals, we tend to prevent someone from achieving his goal because of jealousy.
This is actually one of those bad habits that we Filipinos should eradicate in our system otherwise we will never be successful as one nation.
Filipino time (tardiness)
This seems to be simple but very important. Being lazy and not particular with time could lead to a more serious problems.
In contrast with American time, Filipino time is ordinarily concomitant with tardiness. Something we could not be proud of. Imagine when a program or meeting is set at 9 am it will start at 11 o’clock. I’m sure we all can relate to this simple scenario.
Now while we Filipinos have somewhat become used to Filipino time, it still is a bad habit that we need to get rid of.
Blaming others (irresponsibility)
We, Filipinos, can sometimes be too complacent, we can be irresponsible for our actions and this is so true, I can even see people who have this bad traits in the office.
When mistakes happen, we do not want to take the blame even if in reality it’s our fault, so instead we point at others.

Gossiping
This is a bit funny but yes, Filipinos are fond of backbiting or talking about other people’s business. And do you think only women do that? Funnier because men can also be snooping on other people’s lives.
The worst thing here is, when gossips are passed around, they tend to be warped until the final story becomes too far from the real one thus, causing more damage to the victim.
Attention grabbing
I laugh at this because I do see a lot of Filipinos who had this bad habit, do you know what it’s called in tagalog? 😊Ha ha I don’t want to use the tagalog term here.
Although it is natural for Filipinos to entice attention by standing out as we are a fun and people loving people yet it is a different thing being an attention grabber. Sometimes, in our frantic need to be the center of attraction or to attract the attention of a particular person, we do things that are already embarrassing like butting in conversations as a know-it-all even if it’s pretty obvious that you know less.
Living beyond their means (social climbing)
This is something that pertains to our financial status in life. Although other people from other countries also share the same traits or bad habit yet this habit is also prevalent to Filipinos.
We Filipinos tend to do overspending. I don’t know if I can be identified as one being a parent who is trying to keep his children in a private schools even if it would mean swimming to credit cards or loans.
But no, I don’t consider myself as a social climber for I don’t wear designer clothes and shoes, 😊 I am just a father who wants the best for his children.
Nevertheless I see people who are living beyond their means because they want to live an elite lifestyle, overspending is one of the reasons why a lot of Filipinos still live in poverty.
So these are just a few common Filipino traits I can cite or explain this time. There are still other bad habits that we had inherited from the Spaniards that I think we really need to drop like Ningas cogon and Mañana Habit (procrastination) if we truly want progress.
If we want progress? We need to get rid of those bad habits and this will only be possible if each of us will start the change and be a more responsible Filipino wherever we are in the world.
