#streetlampsunday for the #sevendaysoutside challenge by the lovely @erikah
This street lamp is on the corner across from Abraham Lincoln's home at the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfied, Illinois.
I remembered this simple poem from my grade school days by Rosemary Benet and thought you might enjoy it @erikah ....
If Nancy Hanks
Came back as a ghost,
Seeking news
Of what she loved most,
She'd ask first
"Where's my son?
What's happened to Abe?
What's he done?"
"Poor little Abe,
Left all alone
Except for Tom,
Who's a rolling stone;
He was only nine
The year I died.
I remember still
How hard he cried."
"Scraping along
In a little shack,
With hardly a shirt
To cover his back,
And a prairie wind
To blow him down,
Or pinching times
If he went to town."
"You wouldn't know
About my son?
Did he grow tall?
Did he have fun?
Did he learn to read?
Did he get to town?
Do you know his name?
Did he get on?"
Julius Silberger wrote another poem, entitled "A Reply to Nancy Hanks"
Yes, Nancy Hanks,
The news we will tell
Of your Abe
Whom you loved so well.
You asked first,
"Where's my son?"
He lives in the heart
Of everyone.

nice post @melinda010100
Beautiful picture. Have a wonderful Sunday😊
I was wondering if this lamp is from Abe's time. That's for the poem!
I doubt it. I once stayed in a B&B just a block away from Abe's house and it was so beautiful to see the neighborhood at night.
I bet back then street lights were made with gas or something like that.
I think you are right....if they had street lamps st all. Electric street lamps did not become common until after the 1930's I think.
wow great post dear melinda010100 (61)
I like the poem so much. @margaretwise used to take photos of lamps in Chicago. I like it my friend :)
Thanks! I think a grade school teacher included that poem in a lesson on Abraham Lincoln, and it has stuck with me. I seem to always take photos of lamps when I visit my son in Chicago, so I can understand @margaretwise a fascination with them!
How are you @melinda010100 That street lamp is it an antique? Looks cool I just could not tell how old it is. Do they allow visitors in the Lincoln home?
You can tour the home. His stovepipe hat is on a rack in the front foyer. I would imagine the street lamp is a reproduction, but I'm not certain. Springfield has his Presidential library and Museum, too, and you can even go inside his tomb.
