Medical research brought back good news. Scientists from the University of Manchester, UK, found a drug that has the potential to overcome baldness in men and women.
The discovery of this drug occurs accidentally. The researchers initially analyzed the osteoporosis drug CsA. But in the study, it was found that the drug reduced the levels of the SFRP1 protein, which made cell and tissue growth abnormal.
Dr. Nathan Hawkshaw who led the study eventually turned his attention to the WAY-316606 drug that also contains CsA. The results of this study call the growth of cells and tissues occur in the head, which makes new hair follicles appear.
"This element, which previously had never been thought of for use in the treatment of baldness, helped to regrow human hair lost," said Hawkshaw, quoted from ABC Australia.
Currently, there are two types of drugs used to treat baldness, namely minoxidil and finasteride. But both of these drugs have side effects and are not always effective.
In the future, Dr. Hawkshaw said there needs to be further research to see the benefits of this drug in more detail. He hopes his findings can help find effective baldness cures and minimal side effects.
