Historically, windmills in the Netherlands have many uses. Presumably, the most important use is to pump water out of the lowlands and back into the river through the embankment, so that the soil can be used for farming. In the fourteenth century, the hollow-post-shaped windmill was used to drive spoon wheels to dry the wetlands. Molen (The Windmill) de Roos in Delft originally served as a hollow post windmill, but in the eighteenth century it was rebuilt with higher stone construction. Currently, the windmill has been restored, and opened to the public. In Amsterdam, you can visit Molen de Otter, the only windmill that serves to cut wood, which still operates to this day.
