Luke Shaw told me about his struggle for recovery when he broke his leg. The Manchester United defender revealed his leg was almost amputated.
Shaw suffered a severe injury while strengthening United in a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven in September 2015. He got a hard tackle from Hector Moreno to cause his right leg to fracture in two parts.
The incident caused Shaw to be absent for up to seven months. He just returned to playing at the beginning of the 2016/2017 season.
Shaw revealed how severe the injury was. The 23-year-old defender had the risk of losing his leg because of the many complications.
"I almost lost a leg, but I didn't know it until six months later when the doctor told me," Shaw said as quoted by the Guardian.
"At that time they thought of flying me back (to Manchester). But if I fly, I might have lost my leg because of a clot of frozen blood."
"There are two scars on my legs where they have to dissect and pull it. I just found out six months later. I have many complications on my legs, but now I feel really strong and my right foot is as good as before it broke."
Shaw admitted that he had frightened his career to end sooner. But the support of the closest people, including psychologists, made Shaw rise.
"After my leg was broken, it was a very heavy time. It's a lie if I say sometimes I don't think of stopping playing football," Shaw said.
"I do the same thing every day, for a long time. I can't do anything else because my leg is broken. It makes me frustrated but I can get out of the situation."
"Many good people around me, friends and family help me get through it," Shaw continued.
"Psychologists are also very positive and I have benefited greatly from its existence. I still use its services until now. He is now a close friend and brings out the best from me. I enjoy his services," he said.
