What is Cardstack ?
‘Cardstack is an open source framework and consensus protocol that makes blockchains usable and scalable for the mass market, creating a decentralized software ecosystem that can challenge today’s digital super powers.’
Problem
The current state of the application ecosystem means that there is an app for almost anything you can think of. Often though applications have overlapping features and users can have a large number of applications which each require separate accounts in order to use each particular application.
For users who have adopted decentralized applications (dApps) this has brought a whole new set of problems, often having to acquire and manage different utility tokens in order to conduct transactions within each dApp.
Solution
Cardstack reorganises applications, removing silos and allowing native, cloud and decentralized apps to form a software stack with applications being able to integrate with one another. This means that users can optimise their software stack to fulfil their particular needs and combining the best features of each approach.
Cardstack claim to be able to bring blockchain to ‘mainstream’ users through their ‘full stack’ application framework. User interfaces and workflows are broken down into smaller pieces or ‘cards’ that can be personalised for each user.
Cardstack is building an ‘experience layer’ for users through open source software which offers the following benefits:
Creators of software
· Rewards and compensation for software developers distributed fairly using a ‘new economic model’
· Buyers of applications enter into smart contacts with developers, which covers all the costs associated with deploying and running the applications.
· Developers are also compensated with a split of royalties for creating and maintaining the components of the applications.
Users
· Cardstack breaks down the silos of apps allowing users to access particular functionality across different applications when required.
· They propose that ‘with the fluidity of token-backed applications we can move beyond the one-icon-per-app business arrangement of the current mobile and cloud world’.
Current State of Product
The Cardstack Token Mechanism is currently on the Ethereum testnet. Cardstack have shipped a full stack of dApps with Git as the core and as the dApp ecosystem matures Cardstack will allow new dApps to easily plug into the card system.
Roadmap
Team
Founder / CTO — Christopher Tse
Christopher is the co-founder and CTO of both Dot Blockchain Media and Monegraph Inc. He was previously a Senior Director / Head of R&D at McGraw-Hill Education and Senior Director of Innovation at Business Week.
Lead Developer — Ed Faulkner
Ed is the founder / CTO of Polynomial LLC and BraveLeaf and has experience in leveraging open source development for businesses.
Senior Blockchain Developer — Hassan Abdel-Rahman
Hassan is a former Senior Software Engineer at Monegraph and previously the principal engineer at McGraw-Hill Education.
Data Scientist — Justin Thong
Justin is an academic who has transitioned into this role at Cardstack. I don’t mind this so much as his previous research, especially at MIMOS Berhad where he researched (‘Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) for applications of linear least squares, best rank-r approximation of large matrix and assessment of stability of different algorithms) is very relevant and beneficial for this project.

Token Metrics
Type: Utility (ERC20)
Total tokens: 6,000,000,000 (6B) CARD *
Token sale: 2,400,000,000 (2.4B) CARD
Price per token: ~ $0.017 USD (estimated based upon ETH/USD price which will be set in the smart contract until the token sale is complete)
Hard cap: $35,000,000 USD
Soft cap: $10,000,000 USD
Bonus for pre-allocation: 10%
- A further 4,000,000,000 (4B) CARD tokens will be minted and allocated over 10 years so the maximum number of CARD ever in circulation will be 10,000,000,000. This is to incentivize makers and analytic miners early in the adoption cycle.
Token Distribution
40% — token sale (Groups A, B & C)
20% — Cardstack Foundation Reserve
15% — Cardstack Syndicate and Team Reserve (4 year vesting after Year 1)
10% — Ecosystem Initiatives (Group E)
8% — Airdrops (2% allocated for each drop) (Group D)
7% — Advisors and Agencies
60% of generated tokens will be distributed in Year 1 in the following way:
· Early contributor agreements (Batch A)
· Pre-allocation (Batch B)
· Crowd Fundraiser (Batch C)
· Airdrops (Batch D)
· Year 1 ecosystem initiatives (1/2 of Batch E)
· Advisor / partner allocations
Tokens will be available at the conclusion of the fundraiser, which will be no more than 60 days from the conclusion of the pre-allocation period.
Fund Distribution
40% — Development of platform
20% — Development of Cardstack cards
10% — Facilitate Business (staff etc.)
10% — Advocate & Educate (marketing)
15% — Cardstack Institute (R&D)
5% — Administration & Governance
Token Usage
Tokens can be obtained either through the Cardstack ICO or post ICO via peer to peer transactions (or on exchange). When required, CARD tokens can be redeemed for Software and Services Coupons (SSC) that are sent to app contract. These coupons are locked in a reward pool until a block based timer releases them at the next reward allocation cycle.
When a user starts using the apps, data regarding this usage is sent to the app contract. This data together with other data collected throughout the cycle determines a fair allocation of rewards to makers and miners within the Cardstack ecosystem.
