You have to pay around $10 to breed from what I've heard, but I haven't been able to test this as I've made 4-6 orders and have no cats. I have the state logs to recreate at least 2 of the rejected/failed transactions but I also possess a TxHash of a successful transactions which means I should have at least a kitten at this point. And it confirmed over a day ago too. I tried to work with the CK team, and I understand that they are limited due to volume, but I never got a single response from them, I had to take it up with their parent company Axiom Zen who control nothing about CK or MetaMask but they at least reached out to me right away about my issue, no matter what I'm changing Axiom Zen's FB review, but cash out or stay out of CryptoKitties, it's such a misfortune such a scam got this much attention.
Maybe because I actually intend to support any product I release but I'm no longer feeling the fever for these cats.
the reason for that could be because the network appears to be clogged i got into crypto kitties myself but they are clogging the ethereum network , luckily ethereum team has a solution read here .

I had the same experience, tried to buy and breed some cats but no tx went through even after 20 hrs.
Yes, I would at least make sure to test out my load and throughput capacity first before launching a distributed app haha
