Cody Wilson: A Lesson in Antifragility

Antifragility

Defense Distributed
Cody Wilson and Defense Distributed make an excellent study in the concept of antifragility.

Cody Wilson is an antifragile man, not an easily-melted snowflake. He has proven himself by weathering much heat.

The concept of antifragility was introduced in an excellent book by Nassim Nicholas Taleb a few years back. You should really check it out! If the definition of being fragile is that you are hurt by change, then many will assume that the opposite to be robust. However, then the opposite of fragility is not to be unaffected, but to be strengthened and improved by change.

Cody Wilson is famous for starting Defense Distributed, a company that sells the Ghost Gunner and created the Liberator, a 3D printed single-shot pistol.

The federal government attacked him and his organization five years ago. After five years of fighting, Cody has won the battle. The US government no longer tries to stop him from publishing 3D models of guns online.

Gun Control is Dead

Cody Wilson played a role in destroying gun control, but he's really more the messenger than the guy who single-handedly killed gun control. Technology's expansion has neutered the State's ability to stop people from having guns. Today we can 3D print objects from a variety of tough materials and use inexpensive CNC machines like the Ghost Gunner to make gun parts from billet.

Being the messenger, though, doesn't keep Cody from poking the lame-stream media in the eye!

Within the next decade, I expect that hobbyists will be able to 3D print metal objects, and the disruption will spread to more than just the death of gun control. Industries will become much more decentralized. The greatest values in our economy will be found in bespoke, custom hardware.

It Ain't Over Yet

Are anti-liberty acts carried out by the federal government alone? Nope. Twenty states are now suing Defense Distributed to stop them from publishing gun plans online.
20 States Run by Villains
The states highlighted here are suing Cody Wilson and Defense Distributed, regardless of the federal government's decision.

Cody won't stop. He'll keep fighting. All of this attention makes him and the cause stronger than ever. Even if Cody loses horrifically, he will still be right that gun control is truly dead in any practical sense of the word.

Hear More About It

Cody Wilson is popping up all over the place in libertarian media and elsewhere. As an example, I recommend checking out this excellent interview on the Tom Woods Show:

We Won't Melt #1

Ethical Developer Group has been working on an app for an organization that is doing some really cool work. We can hardly wait to share who it is and what we've done with all of you. Their approach is likely to stir some controversy as they gain more attention, but our client isn't going to shrink from it and neither are we.

We Won't Melt #2

Meanwhile, we are looking at starting a blockchain-based development effort that could easily stir a lot more controversy. We will pursue it regardless, because it's the right thing to do for liberty and human flourishing. Again, we hope to share more soon.
