A lot of things were free before capitalism and various forms of monarchy sprang forth:
Land was initially free but it isn't now in most places.
Clean air used to be free but fresh air is becoming more and more rare. I actually heard of companies selling bottled fresh air in China at one time 😲
In general, it is nature that was given to us for free, without anyone's effort, but capitalists are mining and using up the natural resources we have to put a price on it.
I am not against capitalism per se but I am concerned about late-stage capitalism where technology and automation is used to further concentrate wealth & power among the few, and it can also be used to suppress the will of the people (i.e. the general public).
Robotic soldiers and guards are probably only 10 to 15 years away:

I still appreciate your posts @exyle but FYI there are big names like Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Bill Clinton, Barrack Obama and Mark Zuckerberg who think Universal Basic Income will be a necessity in the future.
